SENIOR AFFAIRS COMMISSION <br /> MINUTES OF THURSDAY,JULY 11,1996 <br /> COMMISSIONERS PRESENT: Vice Chairperson Walsh, Commissioners <br /> Anthony, Capone, Harrison, Moran, and Newell <br /> COMMISSIONERS ABSENT: Chairperson Lloyd <br /> GUESTS PRESENT: Finance Director Brian Ponty, Billing and Collection <br /> Manager Chris Holmquist, Debbie Sargent, Gino <br /> Gasparini <br /> STAFF PRESENT: Superintendent Corinne Centeno, Manager Linda <br /> Griffith, and Secretary Denise Monroe <br /> The regular meeting of the Senior Affairs Commission was called to order <br /> by Vice Chairperson Leo Walsh at 3:07pm. at the Senior Center Annex, 711 <br /> Nevada Street, Redwood City, California. <br /> APPROVAL OF MINUTES <br /> The minutes of the June meeting were approved as mailed. <br /> CORRESPONDENCE <br /> There was no correspondence. <br /> ITEM 1- BFI YARD WASTE PROGRAM PRESENTATION <br /> Billing and Collection Manager Chris Holmquist of the Finance Department <br /> gave some history of State Legislative Bill AB939 which deals with the <br /> reduction of solid waste in the landfills. The bill requires that each city must <br /> have a 50% reduction of solid waste landfill by the year 2000. Redwood City is <br /> currently at 28%. BFI has put forth a proposal of a yard waste program to help <br /> reach this goal. The proposal includes eliminating the end of the month <br /> pick-up by BFI, implementation of green waste pick-ups every two weeks <br /> (Environmental Day), and curbside recycling pick-ups every two weeks which <br /> will accommodate more items. The advantages to this program are <br /> maximum route efficiency, residents pay for the service they use, and there <br /> will be minimum rate impacts to residents, especially seniors. The <br /> disadvantages will be that it will create inconvenience in schedules and <br /> increases to customers that create more waste. Full service pick-ups for 20 <br /> gallon containers, including the end of the month green waste pick-up, will <br /> remain at $5.87 per month.
