SENIOR AFFAIRS COMMISSION <br /> MINUTES OF THURSDAY, MAY 8, 1997 <br /> COMMISSIONERS PRESENT: Chairperson Walsh, Commissioners <br /> Anthony, Harrison, Lloyd, Moran, Newell (arrived 3:10pm), <br /> and Walsh <br /> COMMISSIONERS ABSENT: None <br /> GUESTS PRESENT: Helen Cocco,Jim Baxter <br /> STAFF PRESENT: Superintendent Corinne Centeno, Secretary Denise <br /> Monroe <br /> The regular meeting of the Senior Affairs Commission was called to order <br /> by Chairperson Leo Walsh at 3:05pm at the Senior Center Annex, 711 Nevada <br /> Street, Redwood City, California. <br /> APPROVAL OF MINUTES <br /> The minutes of the April meeting were approved as mailed. <br /> CORRESPONDENCE <br /> There was no correspondence. <br /> ITEM 1-UPDATES/REPORTS <br /> a.) Veterans Memorial Senior Center Operations Review <br /> Commissioner Anthony gave a preliminary oral report of the Operations <br /> Review Sub-Committee. Non-Commission Sub-Committee members Helen <br /> Cocco of Native Daughters of the Golden West and Jim Baxter of Fun After <br /> Fifty were introduced. Commissioner Anthony reviewed the history of the <br /> Veterans Memorial Senior Center and the Senior Center Annex and the <br /> purpose of the facility. He took issue with the references to the facility as a <br /> community versus senior center and the mailing of the City-wide recreation <br /> brochure under the Veterans Memorial Senior Center Advisory Council's <br /> non-profit status. <br /> Commissioner Anthony stated the Operations Reviews Sub-Committee was <br /> unanimous in its conclusions of the report. He spoke about the financial <br /> aspects of the Center and that is it subsidized by the City of Redwood City and <br /> the VMSAC. The VMSAC also pays the salaries of the chef and food service <br /> assistant who prepare the daily lunch for the nutrition program. He was <br /> concerned about the salaries and benefits paid to these positions and felt the <br />
