SENIOR AFFAIRS COMMISSION <br /> MINUTES OF THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 12, 1998 <br /> COMMISSIONERS PRESENT: Vice Chairperson Moran, Commissioners <br /> Anthony, Lloyd, Newell (arrived at 3:50pm), and Walsh <br /> COMMISSIONERS ABSENT: Chairperson Walsh, Commissioner Harrison <br /> GUESTS PRESENT: Dr. Roger Wiley, Debbi Jones-Thomas <br /> STAFF PRESENT: Superintendent Corinne Centeno, Manager Linda Griffith, <br /> Administrative Assistant Denise Monroe <br /> The regular meeting of the Senior Affairs Commission was called to order by <br /> Vice Chairperson Betty Moran at 3:05pm at the Fair Oaks Senior Center, <br /> 2600 Middlefield Road, Redwood City, California. <br /> APPROVAL OF MINUTES <br /> The January minutes were approved as mailed. <br /> CORRESPONDENCE <br /> There was no correspondence. <br /> ORAL COMMUNICATIONS <br /> Superintendent Centeno spoke about the letter from La Raza Centro Legal <br /> regarding senior housing issues and stated that Debbi Jones-Thomas would <br /> like to be on the March agenda to discuss this matter further. Ms. Jones- <br /> Thomas wants input from the Senior Affairs Commission for the Housing and <br /> Human Concerns Committee. Commissioner Anthony spoke regarding his <br /> recent article in the Redwood City Almanac regarding senior housing issues <br /> and his suggestions for improvements. <br /> ITEM 1 — CHAIRPERSON'S REPORT <br /> Vice Chairperson Moran reported that she and Chairperson Walsh met with <br /> Mayor Diane Howard last week. Chairperson Walsh noted he had attended a <br /> recent speech by Colin Powell who is starting volunteer groups around the <br /> country. Vice Chairperson Moran said that Mayor Howard was interested in <br /> this concept and Chairperson Walsh stated he would write to get more <br /> information on this program. Vice Chairperson Moran mentioned that she <br /> and Chairperson Walsh spoke to the Mayor about expanding the <br /> intergenerational programs to other Redwood City schools. <br /> Commissioner Lloyd stated that he and Chairperson Walsh attended a <br /> meeting at Sequoia Hospital recently. He noted that a representative of <br /> Aetna now has an office at Sequoia and this person is responsible for <br /> determining how long patients stay in the hospital for medical care. In-home <br /> support was also discussed at the meeting. Vice Chairperson Moran noted <br /> that Chairperson Walsh wanted to make sure all Commissioners were familiar <br />
