The minutes should include
that Ms. Louella Keyser had lived in her apartment for 20 years and her rent
was recently increased from $550.00 per month to $975.00 per month,
which was an increase of more than 77%. The February minutes were
approved as corrected.
CORRESPONDENCE
There was no correspondence.
ITEM 1 — REQUEST FOR INPUT TO HOUSING AND HUMAN CONCERNS
COMMITTEE ON SENIOR HOUSING
Superintendent Centeno reported Debbi Jones-Thomas was unable to attend
the meeting but stated she was looking for input and ideas from the
Commission on what the Housing and Human Concerns Committee should
be working on regarding rent increase problems in the City.
Commissioner Anthony recommended that rents in Redwood City should not
increase more than 5% annually; that Redwood City should consider
establishing a trailer park and assist people with the purchase of their mobile
homes.
Secretary Monroe reported that she received a call from resident Irwin Zook
who is interested in speaking to the Commission about the formation of a
community grassroots effort for rent control in Redwood City. She was
advised that Mr. Zook has already addressed Council on this matter. The
Commissioners recommended the issue of rent control needs to be explored.
It was reported that Commissioner Newell suggested that the City establish
partnerships with other non-profit housing developers; offer HUD subsidized
housing; and that Lytton Gardens in Palo Alto is a good role model.
