SENIOR AFFAIRS COMMISSION
MINUTES OF THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 10, 1998
COMMISSIONERS PRESENT: Chairperson Walsh, Commissioners Borgens,
Carpe, Harrison, Nobles, and Walsh
COMMISSIONERS ABSENT: Commissioner Moran
GUESTS PRESENT: Vince Truscelli
STAFF PRESENT: Superintendent Corinne Centeno, Manager Linda Griffith,
Administrative Assistant Denise Monroe
The regular meeting of the Senior Affairs Commission was called to order by
Chairperson Leo Walsh at 9:40am at the Veterans Memorial Senior
Center,1455 Madison Avenue, Redwood City, California.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES
The July minutes were approved as mailed.
ITEM 1 — CHAIRPERSON'S REPORT
-Resolution by State Assembly to Study High Cost of Gasoline in the Bay Area
Chairperson Walsh reported the State Assembly passed a resolution asking
Governor Wilson to investigate why the Bay Area is paying more for gasoline
than anywhere else in the state. Commissioner Borgens said that even if
seniors do not drive, they are still impacted if they use public transportation
because gasoline costs are passed on in higher transportation fares.
Commissioner Nobles said as an environmentalist, she would prefer higher
gas costs which would result in less driving by consumers and more
conservation of our natural resources. Commissioner Carpe reported that
recently Rediwheels increased their fares by .50cents per ride in part due to
increased overhead costs such as gasoline. Commissioner Walsh reported
that many seniors still drive but are unable to handle the self-serve gas
pumps and noted that there are only two full serve gas stations in Redwood
City. Commissioner Borgens suggested contacting full serve stations to see
if a deal could be worked out to advertise those stations which agree to offer
to help seniors pump their gas at the same price as self serve. Chairperson
Walsh suggested having the Commissioners inquire at the gas stations they
patronize to see if any of them would be interested in participating in this
program and to report back at the October meeting with their findings.
-Seminar of California Tasking Evolution the Legacy of Prop 13
Chairperson Walsh noted he received an invitation to attend this seminar and
suggested he would write a letter to the City Council to clarify the City's
financial status due to impacts of Proposition 13.
-Federal Campaign Finance Reform
Chairperson Walsh spoke regarding the current status of the bill in the House
of Representatives.
