SENIOR AFFAIRS COMMISSION <br /> MINUTES OF THURSDAY, DECEMBER 10, 1998 <br /> COMMISSIONERS PRESENT: Chairperson Walsh, Commissioners Borgens, <br /> Carpe, Harrison (arrived 9:35am), Nobles and <br /> Walsh <br /> COMMISSIONERS ABSENT: Commissioner Moran <br /> GUESTS PRESENT: Anne Weiss <br /> STAFF PRESENT: Superintendent Corinne Centeno, Administrative Assistant <br /> Denise Monroe <br /> The regular meeting of the Senior Affairs Commission was called to order by <br /> Chairperson Leo Walsh at 9:30am at the Veterans Memorial Senior Center, <br /> 1455 Madison Avenue, Redwood City, California. <br /> APPROVAL OF MINUTES <br /> The following correction was made to the November minutes. Under <br /> "Approval of Minutes", the motion should state it was seconded by M. <br /> Walsh. The minutes were approved as corrected. <br /> ITEM 1 — ADULT PROTECTIVE SERVICES PRESENTATION — ANNE WEISS <br /> Social Worker Anne Weiss spoke about her job with the Adult Protective <br /> Services Division (part of San Mateo County Health Services Department) <br /> and explained that she responds to calls made to the TIES line; does in-home <br /> visits for at-risk patients and elder abuse cases, and is also the liaison to <br /> senior centers in the County. She also provides outreach training to police <br /> and fire departments, paramedics, and hospitals within the County to <br /> educate others on the subject of elder abuse. <br /> Ms. Weiss stated the TIES line (1-800-675-8437) is answered 24 hours a <br /> day by a trained social worker who is knowledgeable on the many services <br /> available throughout the County. In-home visits are made to anyone in need <br /> or at risk. She stated that 1,500 calls are made to the TIES line each month <br /> and the majority are for Information & Referral. Approximately 50 calls per <br /> month are received reporting elder abuse. Ms. Weiss spoke about the laws <br /> governing the protection of seniors and also mentioned the two reporting <br /> agencies available; Ombudsman and Adult Protective Services (TIES line). <br /> Ms. Weiss stated there are four types of abuse: physical, financial, <br /> psychological, neglect. She noted that all calls received to the TIES line are <br /> confidential and each call received concerning elder abuse is responded to by <br /> a social worker. <br /> Ms. Weiss spoke about particular elder abuse cases she had managed and <br /> the Commissioners asked questions about the program. Commissioner <br /> Nobles asked about funding for the program and Ms. Weiss responded that <br /> Adult Protective Services is paid for by the general fund of San Mateo <br /> County and it does not receive any State or Federal funding.
