SENIOR AFFAIRS COMMISSION <br /> MINUTES OF THURSDAY, JANUARY 14, 1999 <br /> COMMISSIONERS PRESENT: Chairperson Moran, Commissioners Borgens, <br /> Carpe, Harrison (arrived 9:40am), Nobles, <br /> L.Walsh and M.Walsh <br /> COMMISSIONERS ABSENT: None <br /> GUESTS PRESENT: None <br /> STAFF PRESENT: Superintendent Corinne Centeno, Administrative Assistant <br /> Denise Monroe <br /> The regular meeting of the Senior Affairs Commission was called to order by <br /> Chairperson Betty Moran at 9:35am at the Veterans Memorial Senior Center, <br /> 1455 Madison Avenue, Redwood City, California. <br /> SPECIAL ORDER OF THE DAY-RECOGNITION OF OUTGOING CHAIRPERSON <br /> LEO WALSH <br /> Outgoing Chairperson Leo Walsh was presented with home-baked cinnamon <br /> rolls, an orchid plant, and a card by the Commissioners to thank him for his <br /> tenure as chairperson of the Senior Affairs Commission and for his work on <br /> the economic development lunches. <br /> APPROVAL OF MINUTES <br /> M/S Nobles/L.Walsh: To approve the December minutes as mailed. <br /> Motion passed unanimously. <br /> ITEM 1 — SEQUOIA MEDICAL CLINIC/AETNA COVERAGE ISSUE <br /> The Commissioners were provided with a copy of the completed resolution <br /> signed by the City Council. Commissioner L.Walsh spoke about the <br /> presentation made to the Council and stated he was appreciative for the <br /> glass of water provided to him at the podium. He thanked the people from <br /> HICAP and the San Mateo Commission on Aging who spoke in support of the <br /> resolution. He noted that representatives from neighboring cities who were <br /> in attendance took a copy of the resolution back to their respective cities to <br /> obtain similar support from their City Councils. Commissioner L.Walsh <br /> suggested the Commission set up a phone committee to follow up with the <br /> elected officials who received a copy of the resolution. Chairperson Moran <br /> suggested also writing follow up letters. Commissioner M.Walsh asked that <br /> Assemblywoman Jackie Speier also be sent a copy of the resolution. <br /> Commissioner Borgens suggested making follow up phone calls and then <br /> following up with a letter from the Commission. Commissioner L.Walsh <br /> asked if Manager Linda Griffith could get some seniors from the Center to act <br /> on the letters. Superintendent Centeno advised the Commission that it was <br /> probably not appropriate for staff to lobby for a political action. <br /> Commissioner Carpe noted the lack of senior involvement and suggested <br /> making presentations during the luncheon programs as a way to reach <br /> seniors. Chairperson Moran noted that as chairperson she is also a member <br />
