SENIOR AFFAIRS COMMISSION <br /> MINUTES OF THURSDAY, APRIL 8, 1999 <br /> COMMISSIONERS PRESENT: Chairperson Moran, Commissioners Borgens, <br /> Harrison, Nobles, L.Walsh and M.Walsh <br /> COMMISSIONERS ABSENT: Commissioner Carpe <br /> GUESTS PRESENT: Debbi Jones-Thomas, John Dempsey, Dr. Roger Willey, <br /> Steven Sanger <br /> STAFF PRESENT: Superintendent Corinne Centeno, Administrative Assistant <br /> Denise Monroe <br /> The regular meeting of the Senior Affairs Commission was called to order by <br /> Chairperson Betty Moran at 1 :00pm in the Redwood Room of the Veterans <br /> Memorial Senior Center, 1455 Madison Avenue, Redwood City, California. <br /> APPROVAL OF MINUTES <br /> Commissioner Borgens asked that a correction be made to the March <br /> minutes under Item 3, Workplan Updates, Housing, last paragraph. The last <br /> line should state that the decision to rent mobile homes is not governed by <br /> the State or City, but by each individual mobile park owner. <br /> M/S M.Walsh/L.Walsh: To approve the March minutes as corrected. <br /> Motion passed unanimously. <br /> CORRESPONDENCE <br /> -The Commissioners received a copy of a letter from Senator Jackie Speier <br /> regarding Medicare HMO's and her introduction of three bills to assist <br /> Medicare enrollees. Commissioner Borgens said she downloaded information <br /> about Senator Speier's bills from the computer; one of the bills has passed <br /> the first step in the legislation process. <br /> -Commissioner Walsh received a letter from BFI regarding its purchase by <br /> Allied Waste Industries for $6.6 billion and assuming a BFI debt of $1 .8 <br /> million. <br /> ITEM 1 — EMERGENCY HOUSING PLAN FOR SENIORS <br /> John Dempsey, Housing and Human Concerns Committee Member and chair <br /> of the sub-committee on senior housing, spoke about the lack of adequate <br /> housing for seniors and the need to establish an emergency housing plan for <br /> seniors. Commissioner Borgens is a member of the sub-committee and Debbi <br /> Jones-Thomas is the staff support person. <br /> Debbi Jones-Thomas stated one of the goals of the sub-committee was to <br /> establish a short term emergency plan for senior housing and to develop <br /> solutions. The Commissioners were provided with a draft copy of the <br /> emergency housing plan for seniors and were asked to review and comment <br /> on the plan. All comments will be forwarded to the Housing and Human <br />
