SENIOR AFFAIRS COMMISSION <br /> MINUTES OF THURSDAY, MAY 13, 1999 <br /> COMMISSIONERS PRESENT: Chairperson Moran, Commissioners Borgens, <br /> Harrison, Nobles, and M.Walsh <br /> COMMISSIONERS ABSENT: Commissioner Carpe, L.Walsh <br /> GUESTS PRESENT: Gladys Sharp <br /> STAFF PRESENT: Manager Linda Griffith, Administrative Assistant Denise <br /> Monroe <br /> The regular meeting of the Senior Affairs Commission was called to order by <br /> Chairperson Betty Moran at 1 :00pm at the Fair Oaks Senior Center, 2600 <br /> Middlefield Road, Redwood City, California. <br /> APPROVAL OF MINUTES <br /> M/S M.Walsh/Harrison: To approve the April minutes as mailed. <br /> Motion passed unanimously. <br /> CORRESPONDENCE <br /> There was no incoming correspondence. <br /> ITEM 1 — FAIR OAKS SENIOR CENTER, PART 2 <br /> Commissioner Nobles introduced TEWCI Board Member and former Senior <br /> Affairs Commissioner Gladys Sharp to the Commissioners. She also passed <br /> out a chronological history sheet on the Fair Oaks Senior Center from 1985 <br /> to present and continued with her explanation of the history of the facility. <br /> Highlights included: moving to its current site in 1989; an agreement signed <br /> with the City stating this facility would always be used as a senior center; <br /> $900,000 contributed towards the $1 million in construction costs; creation <br /> of Parque de la Amistad from 1990 to 1996; lost United Bay Area Way <br /> funding in 1995; sold Casa Umoja apartment building in 1998; city funding <br /> cut in 1998; did not apply for City funding in 1999. <br /> Commissioner Nobles felt that the Fair Oaks Senior Center started out as a <br /> government funded entity and never had to raise its own operating funds. <br /> She noted several fundraising events have been held this past year, but <br /> netted only a minimal amount of funds. She felt that the future of the <br /> Center hangs in the balance and that it could close eventually. The City <br /> would most likely take over the Center or contract with another organization <br /> to run the center. <br /> Commissioner Nobles explained that TEWCI is an umbrella organization and <br /> that the senior center is one element of TEWCI. The Commissioners asked <br /> about asking for donations to help in the operation of the Center. <br /> Commissioner Nobles said that she had done grant writing in the past for the <br /> Center but that the focus is no longer on funding of senior programs or <br />
