SENIOR AFFAIRS COMMISSION <br /> Minutes of Thursday, April 13, 2000 <br /> Commissioners Present: Chairperson Moran, Commissioners <br /> Borgens, Carpe, Nobles, L. Walsh, M.Walsh <br /> Commissioners Absent: Commissioner Harrison <br /> Guests Present: Marvin Goldman, Ethel Walter, Madeline Schwartz, <br /> Kathryn McMillan <br /> Staff Present: Superintendent Corinne Centeno, Secretary Denise <br /> Monroe <br /> The regular meeting of the Senior Affairs Commission was called to <br /> order at 1:00pm by Chairperson Betty Moran in the Redwood Room of <br /> the Veterans Memorial Senior Center, 1455 Madison Avenue, Redwood <br /> City, California. <br /> APPROVAL OF MINUTES <br /> The minutes of the Februalyleeting were approved as mailed. <br /> Commissioner Carpe thanked everyone for their good wishes and get <br /> well cards while she was recovering from a broken hip. <br /> ITEM 1 — SENIOR HEALTH CARE ISSUES <br /> Commissioner Leo Walsh spoke about a letter sent by the Sequoia <br /> Medical Associates, Inc. to their senior patients regarding their <br /> decision to withdraw from San Mateo IPA. He said he spoke with Dr. <br /> Aaron of Sequoia Medical who stated that the decision to withdraw was <br /> not a financial decision, but because they were unable to refer their <br /> patients to specialists and could not deliver adequate care. <br /> Marvin Goldman of HICAP spoke about the effect this decision has <br /> upon the seniors in the community and that HICAP has been <br /> overwhelmed by phone calls about this matter. Mr. Goldman <br /> explained that HICAP did a recent presentation at the Veterans <br /> Memorial Senior Center to explain the problem and different <br /> alternatives available. He spoke to the Commissioners about Medi- <br /> care and Medi-gap and HMO issues and stated that this problem exists <br /> nationwide. Three guests spoke about their personal experiences <br /> changing HMOs and the problems that occurred. Mr. Goldman <br />
