SENIOR AFFAIRS COMMISSION <br /> MINUTES OF THURSDAY, JUNE 8, 2000 <br /> COMMISSIONERS PRESENT: Chairperson Moran, Commissioners Borgens, <br /> Carpe, Harrison (arrived 1 :02pm), Nobles, <br /> L.Walsh (arrived 1 :11 pm), and M.Walsh <br /> COMMISSIONERS ABSENT: None <br /> GUESTS PRESENT: None <br /> STAFF PRESENT: Superintendent Corinne Centeno, Secretary Denise Monroe <br /> The regular meeting of the Senior Affairs Commission was called to order by <br /> Chairperson Betty Moran at 1 :00pm at the Senior Center Annex, 711 Nevada <br /> Street, Redwood City, California. <br /> APPROVAL OF MINUTES <br /> M/S M.Walsh/J.Borgens: To approve the May minutes as mailed. <br /> Motion passed. <br /> CORRESPONDENCE <br /> A letter was received from Marlene Annuzzi of the Veterans Memorial Senior <br /> Center to Commissioner Nobles thanking her for organizing the elder abuse <br /> forum and thanking the Commission for their support. <br /> ITEM 1 - UPDATE ON TARGET EDUCATION AND WELFARE COUNCIL, FAIR <br /> OAKS SENIOR CENTER ISSUES <br /> Superintendent Centeno reported the Family Services Agency is continuing to <br /> work on transitioning into the new facility although there is no legal <br /> agreement as of this date. Commissioner Nobles invited the Commissioners <br /> to attend the TEWCI plaque dedication on Friday, June 16 at 10:30am; lunch <br /> will follow the dedication ceremony. She also reported responsibility for the <br /> TEWCI playground will be taken over by the Bay Area Gardeners Association. <br /> TEWCI has received a $10,000 grant from the County for ongoing <br /> maintenance of the site. <br /> ITEM 2 - UPCOMING FEDERAL ELECTIONS AND SENIOR HEALTH CARE <br /> ISSUES <br /> Superintendent Centeno read a letter from Vice President Gore stating he <br /> would be unable to accept our invitation to come to Redwood City. <br /> Commissioner M.Walsh stated that San Mateo IPA is taking a final vote <br /> tonight regarding no longer accepting HMO payments as did the Sequoia <br /> Medical Group. Commissioner L.Walsh brought in a San Francisco Chronicle <br /> article stating that CIGNA will be dropping senior HMOs which will affect <br /> approximately 104,000 patients nationwide. The Commissioners discussed <br /> the fact that this is a nation-wide problem and is now affecting seniors as <br /> well as non-seniors. Commissioner L.Walsh proposed that the Commission <br /> go to the City Council to ask our Federal elected officials to establish a <br />
