SENIOR AFFAIRS COMMISSION
MINUTES OF THURSDAY, JULY 13, 2000
COMMISSIONERS PRESENT: Chairperson Moran, Commissioners Carpe,
Harrison, Nobles, and M. Walsh
COMMISSIONERS ABSENT: Commissioners Borgens and L.Walsh
GUESTS PRESENT: None
STAFF PRESENT: Superintendent Corinne Centeno, Secretary Denise Monroe
The regular meeting of the Senior Affairs Commission was called to order by
Chairperson Betty Moran at 1 :00pm at the Veterans Memorial Senior Center,
1455 Madison Avenue, Redwood City, California.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES
M/S M.Walsh/C.Nobles: To approve the June minutes as mailed.
Motion passed.
CORRESPONDENCE
There was no correspondence.
ITEM 1 — UPDATE ON TARGET EDUCATION AND WELFARE COUNCIL, FAIR
OAKS SENIOR CENTER ISSUES
Superintendent Centeno reported that as of July 1, we have a new provider
at the Fair Oaks Senior Center. Family Service Agency (FSA) is continuing
with the nutrition program and Sequoia Adult School will begin offering
classes on site. The agreement with FSA is in progress and there will
continue to be a focus on senior activities. She reported that 44 seniors
attended the lunch program yesterday.
Commissioner Carpe stated that in the last 10 days, the dining room
attendance has dropped to 20 people because Rediwheels is too costly for
many of the participants. Previously it cost .75 cents round trip on
Rediwheels to get to the Center and it now costs $2.00 per round trip. This
is affecting 8 to 9 participants. Superintendent Centeno stated she will
check the attendance for the lunch program and reminded the Commission
that FSA has been in operation only seven days. Commissioner Carpe said
she has been told that the morale is also not good. Superintendent Centeno
stated she will follow up on the following issues: morale of the seniors,
transportation issue including the cost of Rediwheels and the number of
people currently being transported to the Center; the number of attendees at
the lunch program; and the current message on the phone recording for the
Center.
