SENIOR AFFAIRS COMMISSION <br /> MINUTES OF THURSDAY, AUGUST 9, 2001 <br /> COMMISSIONERS PRESENT: Chairperson Harrison, Commissioners <br /> Borgens, Grove, Moran and L. Walsh <br /> COMMISSIONERS ABSENT: Commissioners Carpe and M. Walsh <br /> GUESTS PRESENT: Ron Crates, John Dempsey, Susan Houston, Dave <br /> Stewart, Vincent Truscelli <br /> STAFF PRESENT: Superintendent Chris Beth, Manager Linda Griffith, <br /> Administrative Clerk Kathy Bede <br /> The regular meeting of the Senior Affairs Commission was called to order by <br /> Chairperson Jean Harrison at 1:00pm in the Sunset Room of the Veterans <br /> Memorial Senior Center, 1455 Madison Avenue, Redwood City, California. <br /> APPROVAL OF MINUTES <br /> M/S L. Walsh/Borgens: To approve the July minutes as mailed. <br /> Motion passed. <br /> CORRESPONDENCE <br /> There was no new correspondence other than what was mailed in <br /> Commissioners monthly packet. <br /> ITEM 1 — INTERGENERATIONAL PROGRAM PROPOSAL — RON CRATES <br /> Superintendent Ron Crates of the Redwood City School District announced that <br /> the District is in the midst of completion of construction on 13 gymnasiums, <br /> 100 classrooms and 13 libraries, with computer labs in 17 schools. He <br /> proposed the shared use of the new facilities with the community for computer <br /> classes and other programs in the evenings and on weekends and possible <br /> tutoring programs for adults and children during school hours. He requested <br /> the assistance of the Senior Affairs Commission to find out what the <br /> community needs and wants that the School District could help to provide. <br /> The Commissioners discussed the proposal and gave suggestions and <br /> concerns. Comments included: the improved appearance of the schools, the <br /> need for more affordable and non-threatening computer classes for seniors, <br /> handicapped accessibility of district schools, intergenerational programming, <br /> scheduling community use of facilities around school calendars, the need for <br /> transportation to school sites, possibility of van and/or school bus shuttles, <br /> availability of funds to pay tutors and the possible involvement of Canada <br />
