SENIOR AFFAIRS COMMISSION
MINUTES OF THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 14, 2002
COMMISSIONERS PRESENT: Chairperson Harrison, Commissioners Carpe,
Grove, and L. Walsh and M. Walsh
COMMISSIONERS ABSENT: Commissioners Borgens and Moran
GUESTS PRESENT: Edna Amberg, Irene Kehue, Pat O'Rourke, Valencia,
Doris Knudsen, Susan Houston, Joaquin Nedio, Carla
Garcia, Ethel Robinson
STAFF PRESENT: Manager Linda Griffith and Administrative Clerk Kathy Bede
The regular meeting of the Senior Affairs Commission was called to order by
Chairperson Jean Harrison, at 1:05pm in Rooms 4, 5 and 6 of the Fair Oaks
Senior Center, 2600 Middlefield Road, Redwood City, California.
Commissioner Carpe requested a copy of the minutes from a transportation
meeting conducted by Commissioner Borgens. They can be obtained from
Commissioner Borgens in the following week.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES
M/S L. Walsh/Harrison: To approve the January minutes as mailed.
Motion passed.
CORRESPONDENCE
No correspondence this month.
ORAL COMMUNICATIONS
Transportation concerns were discussed. A recommendation was made that
low-income seniors, who are not disabled, be provided bus passes by the
city. Lack of sufficient parking at Fair Oaks Senior Center is a problem for
patrons, causing some to return home without entering, and missing meals
and socialization. The occupants of Human Service Agency, at 2500
Middlefield Road, apparently are using parking spaces previously available for
seniors. Susan Houston reported that Teri Chin is negotiating with that
agency to improve the parking situation. Chairperson Harrison said the
commission would report the information to Council after consulting with Teri
Chin. A recommendation was made for bilingual commissioners and
commission meetings. It was requested that the Commission research and
report back, how criteria is established on housing waiting lists.
