SENIOR AFFAIRS COMMISSION <br /> MINUTES OF THURSDAY,JUNE 9,2016 <br /> COMMISSIONERS PRESENT: Chair Watanabe,Vice Chair Draeger,Commissioners Britschgi,Cooperman, <br /> James,Jones and Paley <br /> STAFF PRESENT: PRCS Manager Utecht, PRCS Supervisor Mark Yasuda &Administrative Clerk Kathy <br /> Bede <br /> GUEST PRESENT: Newly appointed Commissioner lema Turk <br /> The regular meeting of the Senior Affairs Commission was called to order by Chair Watanabe&Vice <br /> Chair Draeger at 1:04 p.m.at the Veterans Memorial Senior Center, 1455 Madison Avenue, Redwood <br /> City, California. <br /> APPROVAL OF MINUTES:M/S:James/Paley:To approve the May 12,2016 minutes as written. Motion <br /> passed. <br /> ITEM 1—Welcome Jema Turk <br /> Newly appointed Senior Affairs Commissioner Jema Turk was introduced to her fellow commissioners as <br /> a guest for this meeting since the official swearing in ceremony has not yet been held. Each <br /> commissioner introduced themselves,welcomed her and provided a brief history of their time served on <br /> the commission. They told of their particular focus interests and the accomplishments and goals of the <br /> commission. Jema thanked the commissioners for welcoming her and told the commission about <br /> herself and her interests.Jema was an ardent volunteer for the Alzheimer's Association of Northern <br /> California. She served for 3 years as co-chair of their annual Memory Walk fundraiser in San Francisco. <br /> Affordable housing and transportation are 2 topics she is most interested in working on. <br /> ITEM 2—Senior Activities <br /> Seniors on the Square—Friday,June 10t'', 10:00 am—12:00 pm. The focus this year is Elder Abuse <br /> Awareness. There will be 25 vendors,Singer Rick Stevens, RCPD Sargent will speak about elder abuse. <br /> Elder Abuse Awareness handouts will be distributed. Mayor Seybert and Councilmember Diane Howard, <br /> The Daily Journal, Ombudsman Services,Veterans Memorial Senior Center will all be present. <br /> The Commissioners discussed how widespread elder abuse is,that is mostly financial abuse and mostly <br /> by family members. There is a lack of awareness of the problem because often the senior victims are <br /> isolated and perhaps afraid of consequences from their abusers. <br /> San Mateo County Fair Senior Day—Tuesday,June 14t'',Veterans Memorial Senior Center will have a <br /> booth. Senior Affairs Commissioners will attend. Admission is free for seniors that day. <br /> Redwood Shores—More outreach to the senior community in Redwood Shores has been requested. <br /> Bruce is working with Wider Circle to conduct some of their programs at Sandpiper community center <br /> and advertise events in The Pilot. The commissioners would like to meet with the Redwood Shores <br /> seniors requesting more activities and learn what they are specifically interested in,so they can be <br /> better served. They will also research what senior groups are at the Shores and may meet with them. <br />
