Commissioner
Cooperman stated that 70 Strong is a program similar to the Sequoia Village concept of seniors aging in
place, but without a membership fee.

Commissioner Britschgi suggested inviting Wider Circle to speak at the September SAC meeting for an
update on their progress. Bruce commented that Wider Circle is doing very well. They are working with
San Mateo County Healthcare Agency. They are now starting a 2nd set of groups and have a 2nd session
with Casa de Redwood residents.

Commissioner Paley suggested inviting co-chairs Barbara Pierce and Dee Eva to speak to the
Commission in November about the sesquicentennial celebration.

ITEM 5 - Commissioners’ Reports

Vice Chair Cooperman reported that she has been in contact with Sue Nicks, who is president of the
Redwood Shores Association and will be meeting with her regarding the needs of seniors living in
Redwood Shores. The Senior Affairs Commission has met a few times at the Shores in the past. They
have invited residents to attend the meetings by advertising in The Pilot, but no one ever came.
Commissioner James and Vice Chair Cooperman will arrange another meeting with her to discuss what
in particular the Senior Affairs Commission can do for the seniors of Redwood Shores. Bruce contacted
Wider Circle about further outreach to senior in Redwood Shores. They will conduct a senior survey on
the Redwood City website and advertise in The Pilot. They will also offer cooking, walking, pizza and
pinot programs at the Shores.

Vice Chair Cooperman attended the County Elder Abuse Awareness event on June 15th. She also
attended the LBGTQ vigil in Redwood City after the Orlando massacre. Assemblyman Mullin and
Senator Rich Gordon and many others were present at the very moving event. She attended the
Supervisors meeting in July where the decision was made to continue the sales tax, some of which goes
to affordable housing rather than put an affordable housing bond measure on the ballot. They also
voted to continue the housing inspection program for fire protection in homes and to reallocate funds
for healthy homes outreach efforts, which is also related to affordable housing. Pedestrian safety is an
issue in the County. As a County commissioner she will poll the Redwood City, Menlo Park and East Palo
elected officials about what is being done here to promote pedestrian safety in their jurisdictions. The
County will then compile the information to see what they can do to improve situations.

Commissioner James recommended that Vice Chair Cooperman contact the El Camino Real Corridor
Advisory Committee regarding the El Camino Real Corridor Plan. Commissioner James offered to
contact Jim Harnett on behalf of the Sierra Club’s Sustainable Land Use Committee about transit owned
land for sale and much affordable housing will be part of the negotiation between landowners and
developers. He was interested to learn that transit is looking towards work force housing. He also
attended Art on the Square and was very impressed by all the talent on display by local artists. He
