/ <br /> CIVIC CULTURAL COMMISSION <br /> MINUTES OF THURSDAY, JANUARY 8, 1998 <br /> COMMISSIONERS PRESENT: Chairperson Ball, Commissioners <br /> Britschgi, Distefano, Redington and Saye <br /> COMMISSIONERS ABSENT: None <br /> GUESTS PRESENT: Tamara Piulle, Jeff Filippi, Barbara Pierce, Lynn Hilferty <br /> STAFF PRESENT: Superintendent Corinne Centeno <br /> The meeting of the Civic Cultural Commission was called to order by <br /> Chairperson Virginia Ball at 7:05pm in Room 1 of the Community Activities <br /> Building, 1400 Roosevelt Avenue, Redwood City, California. <br /> APPROVAL OF MINUTES <br /> The minutes of the December meeting were approved as mailed. <br /> SPECIAL ORDERS OF THE DAY <br /> -Presentation to outgoing Commissioner Tamara Piulle by Chairperson Ball <br /> Chairperson Ball spoke regarding the accomplishments of Ms. Tamara Piulle, <br /> specifically the tapestry at Red Morton, the Time Capsule at City Hall. She <br /> thanked her for 14 years of service. Ms. Piulle announced she is now an <br /> alternate for the Grand Jury. She spoke about her happiness at being part of <br /> the Cultural Commission and that she hoped to continue to work with the <br /> City. She thanked the Cultural Commission and staff for making the task <br /> enjoyable. Staff presented Ms. Piulle with a certificate of appreciation and a <br /> house plant. The Commission recessed for refreshments at 7:14pm. <br /> The meeting was called back to order by 7:25pm. <br /> -Presentation on "Music is Instrumental" Program by Dr. Jeffrey Filiipi <br /> Dr. Filippi spoke about the "Music is Instrumental" Program which consists <br /> of donations of musical instruments; funding for repair of instruments, and <br /> the purchase of instruments to donate to the schools. Last year's <br /> instrumental program had 300 students; 80% of the students needed to use <br /> school district instruments and 250 instruments were needed. The program <br /> hopes to secure enough instruments to abolish the "lottery" system and the <br /> need for parents to purchase or rent instruments. Dr. Filippi spoke about the <br /> benefits of music programs including improved education, improved students' <br /> self-confidence and reduction in delinquency. He asked for donations to the <br /> program and for the Commission's support of this program in the form of a <br /> letter of conceptual endorsement. Barbara Pierce indicated that RESCUE is <br /> working with Carol McNamara of the Redwood City School District's <br /> instrumental program. <br />
