� <br /> CIVIC CULTURAL COMMISSION <br /> MINUTES OF THURSDAY, DECEMBER 6, 2001 <br /> COMMISSIONERS PRESENT: Chairperson Britschgi, Commissioners Ball, <br /> Douglas, and Souitanian <br /> COMMISSIONERS ABSENT: Commissioners Dale, Del Carlo and Kushin <br /> GUESTS PRESENT: ]eff Filippi, Dr. Javier Pacheco, Kay O'Neill <br /> STAFF PRESENT: Director Corinne Centeno, Secretary Denise Monroe <br /> The meeting of the Civic Cultural Commission was called to order by <br /> Chairperson Barbara Britschgi at 7:04pm in Room 1 of the Community <br /> Activities Building, 1400 Roosevelt Avenue, Redwood City, California. <br /> APPROVAL OF MINUTES � <br /> M/S Soultanian/Ball: To approve the November minutes as mailed. <br /> Motion passed. <br /> CORRESPONDENCE <br /> -A variety of newsletters and announcements were received. No action <br /> required. <br /> -Sylvia Duncan of the Repertory Dance Theater submitted a thank you letter <br /> and a financial report from the "Halloween Hoot" event held at the Fox <br /> Theater in October. She also included letters of appreciation she received <br /> from various schools and a booklet of thank you letters from Garfield School. <br /> ORAL COMMUNICATIONS <br /> Jeff Filippi, former Civic Cultural Commissioner, spoke about the "Music is <br /> Instrumental Program" which provides musical instruments to elementary <br /> school students. He stated that with community outreach and sizable <br /> donations from the Redwood City Optimist Club, many new musical <br /> instruments have been provided to the schools. The number of elementary <br /> music students in the school district has increased from 209 to 630. Mr. <br /> Filippi noted that with this increase, the high schools and junior college music <br /> programs need to be prepared for this influx of students. He also spoke <br /> about Sequoia High School's outstanding music program in the 1970's and <br /> early 1980's and the decline of Sequoia's current music program. He <br /> introduced Dr. Javier Pacheco, who is the new Music Director at Sequoia High <br /> School. Dr. Pacheco advised the Commission that Sequoia's band program is <br /> in poor condition and there has been a large turnover of band teachers at <br />
