7.1.F. - Page 12
Rita Morton has lived on Hastings for almost 48 years and spoke in favor of keeping the
neighborhood peaceful without additions. She also said that people living on busier
streets already knew about the established schools in the area.
Rich Morton expressed appreciation of the work the Planning Commission has done, but
he said that one thing was missing - McGarvey's connection to 280 with the traffic of
people going to work and how anything else would add to this. He noted that a traffic
circle was recently installed in that area to slow people down and spoke in favor of
upholding the decision of the Planning Commission.
Karen Donnelly lives on McGarvey Avenue and spoke about traffic in her area and
expressed concern that this project would disrupt the peace behind her home. She spoke
against the project and provided detailed information about other schools and programs
that operate in the area (video on file).
Job Gregory, a life-long resident, spoke on behalf of the owners, questioning why so
many families choose schools outside of Redwood City. He opined that there is an
inadequate supply of nondenominational schools in Redwood City. He spoke about the
need to think long-term for value creation here and for the future in educating our youth
so that they can be better, compete, and contribute to the growth of the area. He also
opined that the Bergs had made material changes to the project and he is in favor of the
project.
Kathleen Sochan lives nearby and spoke about the bad traffic, providing pictures and
examples (handouts on file). She noted that the schools have good intentions but they
cannot make the parents follow the drop off plans. She said for years she has seen
parents not follow them and cause traffic, hazards, and endangering the safety of others.
She is concerned about the maintenance and safety of the property, noted that this is a
one-way street, and opined that it would then be difficult for emergency vehicles to access
it.
Mary Ann Clifford lives on Connecticut and opined that children receive a fine education
here. She spoke against the project while noting that Mayor Gee had earlier attended a
Planning Commission meeting in January to thank this Commission for their hard work
and how City Council relies on its decision. She noted that the Planning Commission
denied this project. She also noted that this site is not flat so that it is not as large as it
may seem.
Melissa Sanville works fulltime in industry and volunteers with teens on the evenings and
weekends and opined that private schools offer opportunities and options that public
schools, while great, may not, such as providing intimacy or special needs for children.
She opined that the Bergs are of high character and will work well with the community,
and that while a lot has been said about the noise and traffic, she spoke of investing in
our future, our children, who are the most valuable resource and she hopes the project
will be approved.
Richard Dalton said that he and his wife have been part of this community for about 25
years and they have raised nine children here and they have elected to use education
JOINT CITY COUNCIL/SUCCESSOR AGENCY BOARD July 28, 2014
MEETING MINUTES PAGE 11
