Therefore, she would be interested in the different levels of
demand and what the trend would be. Director Aknin answered that it was part of the
Housing Element that they could bring up in the discussion.
Another Council Member thanked the panel for sharing their expertise. She is proud of the
accomplishments Redwood City had done on this issue, but that more needs to be done.
She is excited on how we can continue to work with staff. This Council Member also noted
that working on Housing goes hand in hand with Transportation issues.
A Planning Commissioner appreciated the information she received from the panel. Also,
she said that this is a community dialogue and it needs to raise the issues on housing for
seniors, homeless, veterans, and students. She would like to meet with the community and
bridge gaps where needed. She would like to see the Housing Element bring up the
homeless and veterans housing needs.
Vice Mayor Foust would like staff to look into the matter mentioned by one of the speakers
regarding the impact of new housing development. Vice Chair Bondonno thanked the
panel and opined that this meeting was informative. He stated that the City needed to
focus and continue to do the work that needs to be done. He would like to have some of the
data that was discussed earlier so that there is focus on where to concentrate, some
prioritization, and getting the biggest return on investment and flexibility.
A Council Member mentioned that funding is a key issue and that the City is limited on what
options it has due to the loss of redevelopment funding. This Council Member would like to
see limiting Mixed Use on the El Camino Precise Plan and no retail. He also mentioned that
the City should relook at the housing stock in the downtown area.
Another Council Member thanked Staff and the panel stating that the information has been
helpful. She would like it to be on the record that HEART (Housing Endowment and
Regional Trust of San Mateo) has a program to provide funds to developers. She also
addressed the regional housing numbers and she would like to have the support of Ms.
Lorenzana-Campo in assessing our low income numbers.
Mayor Gee thanked the panel for their work and contributions as well as the Planning
Commission and the public. He also said that the General Plan Subcommittee is working
on an El Camino Precise Plan. He would like the Council, Planning Commission, and Staff
to work on this issue, including finding subsidy funding, by the end of this year. Director
Aknin thanked the Council, Planning Commission, panel, and community for their
contributions to this discussion.
10. MATTERS OF COUNCIL INTEREST
A.
