• Y <br /> RECREATION DIVISION MONTHLY REPORT <br /> MARCH 1977 <br /> COMMUNITY LEISURE SERVICES <br /> After-School Sports ( Grades 4- 6 ) <br /> During the first week in March , Hunch Basketball qualifying rounds were <br /> held at all local schools to determine the City Tournament finalists . <br /> Upsets were the order of the day during the finals held at Sequoia on <br /> Saturday , March 5th . <br /> Roving Leaders <br /> Our second effort at roving leaders began on March 7 at Selby Lane , <br /> Edison and Taft Schools . Each school has a team of five roving leaders . <br /> Their responsibility is to provide programs for 2 1 / 2 to 3 hours for <br /> approximately 150 to 200 students . The program includes : parachute <br /> and earthball events , organized games , candle making , lanyards , tye - <br /> dying , and talent shows . <br /> This year each team stays at one school for two weeks and then rotates <br /> to new schools . This program lasts four to five weeks and the average <br /> daily attendance has been 150- 175 participants per school . <br /> After-School Activities ( Grades 7 -8 ) <br /> After the basketball season concluded on March 1st , the Junior High <br /> program has dropped in attendance . <br /> McKinley : Coaches attempted to organize volleyball teams for 7 & 8th <br /> grade boys and flag football for girls . Student response was limited <br /> and the past few weeks have been spent in a 3 -day per week program of <br /> drop- in gym use , soccer and softball . <br /> Hoover : Drop- In Gym use , soccer and softball three days per week . <br /> Kennedy : Boys have soccer and softball for their activities while the <br /> girls have a highly successful bowling league ( 50-75 participants ) ; and <br /> Friday gymnastics in the multi - purpose room is also available to the girls . <br /> This program concludes on March 31st prior to Easter Vacation . <br /> Coming Attractions for April : 1 ) Highly successful Easter Day Camp Program <br /> 2 ) Elementary and Junior High Track Program <br /> - 10- <br />
