Since that time , the Center has developed more Special Interest Classes ,
which include structured activities during noon-time at the schools . They
have added a Variety Show and a Recreation Night at Hoover School , and
teen activities in the summer . The Center was also involved in the March
of Dimes Walkathon again this year which resulted in over $48 , 000 in pledges .
Ms . Mosher hoped that future areas of development would include having the
teen volunteers work with seniors , expanding the Recreation Night at Hoover
School to two nights per week , adding backpack trips again into the program ,
adding a Community Recreation Concept Program at Hoover School and expanding
teen community service programs .
Ms . Mosher informed the Commission that she was the current President of
the Bay Area Teen Supervisors and that they meet once a month and talk
about teens and their needs .
Chairman Schlesinger asked if the Recreation Department could get any
government funding for teen activities . Mr . Weeks indicated that there is
currently a bill in the House Ways and Means Committee to fund innovative
recreation programming and special needs such as programs for the handi -
capped . Mr . Weeks indicated that if this bill passes , the Department
will review the requirements and the application process for possible
funding .
Mr . Weeks further indicated that another possibility for funding would be
foundation funding . He indicated that the Department would examine this
area of funding in some detail .
Commissioner Pound felt that the progress that she has seen with the teen
program is one of the most impressive program activities in the Parks
and Recreation Department .
Chairman Schlesinger thanked Ms . Mosher and Mr . Heavey for attending the -
meeting and informing the Commission of their activities with the teens .
AGENDA ITEM 2 . Building Operations - Deposit Fees •
Chairman Schlesinger briefly reviewed the Operation Policies Committee
Report of July 20 , 1977 and reviewed the Committee ' s reasons for its
recommendation to raise the deposit fee from $50 to $100 .
Commissioner Buckhout inquired if the facility use fees charged were
comparable to those of other cities . Mr . Paulson indicated that a
telephone survey is planned to find out what other cities are charging
for the use of their facilities .
Commissioner Anderson inquired as to what percentage of the wedding
receptions and private parties resulted in damage to the building or
any of its contents . Mr . Paulson replied that about 1 % of the activi -
ties resulted in either extra hours being used or damage to the building
or its contents . It was pointed out , however , that this damage is often
significant .
-2-
