PARK DIVISION MONTHLY REPORT
OCTOBER 1977
Grounds Maintenance crews with the assistance of the Building Mainten -
ance crew completed the renovation of the lawn area at the Chamber of
Commerce Building . The renovation included the replacement of much of
the existing sprinkler system , together with reseeding the turf area .
This work will be reimbursed by the Chamber of Commerce in compliance
with the contractual agreement with the City for the maintenance of
their landscaped area .
Anticipating that this winter will bring reasonably normal rainfall ,
the turf areas in the various park and landscaped areas throughout
the City were fertilized this month . This work was done in the hopes
that normal rainfall together with fertilization will encourage vigorous
root growth throughout the fall and spring months which will result in
a stronger turf in order to resist another drought year , if necessary .
Repair of irrigation systems and restrooms resultant from vandalism
occupied much of the time of the Building Maintenance crews during
the month of October . It was necessary to completely repaint the
interior of the restroom at Marine World Parkway after vandals spray-
painted obscenities all over the walls , wash basins , and commodes .
The renovation of the turf areas at Mezes Park was completed and the
renovation of the Woodside Road turf areas continues . These turf
areas together with others throughout the park system continue to
receive drastically reduced irrigation in compliance with the water
allocation plan . The renovation process together with turf manage-
ment practices utilizing aerification , thatching , and overseeding
has greatly assisted in preserving most of the significant turf areas
throughout the parks and landscaped areas . In accordance with current
water conservation policy , the planting of fall bedding plants in the
flower beds of the landscaped areas throughout the City will continue
to be deferred until such time as the drought is significantly reduced .
Additionally , the planting of street trees continues to be deferred .
The Street Tree crews continue with their normal work assignments
together with handling special requests from the School District
relative to raising several trees which interfer with school bus
routes . Several streets requiring this special attention included
McGarvey Avenue , " G " Street , Maddux Avenue , Hampton Avenue , and
Arlington Road .
-8r
