TO : Parks & Recreation Commission
FROM : Open Space Committee - Chairman Knecht
DATE : December 28 , 1977
SUBJECT : PROPOSED SALE OF ELEMENTARY SCHOOL SITE IN EMERALD HILLS
The Open Space Committee met on December 28 , 1977 . Those present were
Commissioners Knecht , Anderson , and Weintraub .
It was pointed out to the Committee that the Redwood City School Dis -
trict had notified the Department that they were interested in selling
two of its unused school sites - one located at the corner of Canada
Road and Godetia Drive which is located in the town of Woodside and
the other site is a ten- acre site located in Emerald Hills within the
City of Redwood City with frontages on Robertson Way , Hillcrest Way
and Eastview Way . In that the site in the town of Woodside is not
within the City limits , the Committee directed its attention to the
site in Emerald Hills which is in the City limits . It was explained
to the Committee that the Government Code:. Section 54220 requires
school districts to offer excess properties to the City and County
Parks and Recreation Departments and to the State Resources Agency
prior to their sale . This requirement is to ascertain whether or
not the public agencies are interested in purchasing the sites prior
to their being placed on the market for public sale .
The site in Emerald Hills is located directly south of and contiguous
to the State College site . The Committee visited the site in order to
obtain first hand knowledge of the area .
It was pointed out to the Committee that the County Department of Parks
and Recreation and the Mid Peninsula Regional Open Space District have
been discussing the possibility of a joint venture on the State College
site . It was suggested that the adjacent elementary school site should
be a part of that consideration . It was felt that this would be a logi -
cal addition to the State College site .
At the conclusion of the discussion , the Committee felt that in light
of the lack of City funds for the purchase of additional park property
together with the fact that the location of this site was somewhat
inaccessible as well as quite separated from the main population of
the City , their recommendation would be to decline the offer to pur-
chase the property , however , urge the County and the Open Space Dis -
trict to include the site along with their consideration of the State
College site .
- 3-
