The installation of the automatic irrigation system by Park
Division personnel is now complete and the turf areas have been sodded.
Shrubs and trees will be p7anted together with some bedding plants
which will complete the landscaping of this new street project.
During the month the park crews initiated their spraying program utili-
zing selective herbicides for the control of broadleaf weeds in the
turf areas. Weed infestation has been a severe problem this spring
thraughout all the plant areas resultant from an accumulation of weed
seeds during the drought years coupled with unprecedented spring rains.
The rapid growth of the weeds has made it nearly impossible to keep
up with.
Park crews assisted with the Flower & Art Shpw which was held May 20
and 21 , at the Veterans Memorial Building.
On May 17, the CETA workers together with approximately half of the
funded employees attended an all-day safety training seminar at the
Veterans Building. The seminar covered the general safety procedures
and practices as related to the job environment, equipment handling,
and attempted to develop sound personal safety habits for the indivi-
dual worker. Additional sessions are planned to include the balance
of the funded employees as well as any new CETA personnel assigned to
the Department.
Utilizing CETA personnel , the painting of the street furniture on
Broadway in the downtown area together with the kiosks continues.
In addition to the huge volume of work requests of normal street tree
orders, the Street Tree Section crews have been engaged in the initial
pruning and structuring of all the trees on Broadway which were planted
in connection with the downtown beautification project. This work must
be accomplished in the early hours of the day prior to the accumulation
of traffic on the street. Additionally, all of the trees that are planted
in the movable planters in the business district were fertilized.
After effects of the two-year drought and weather related problems con-
tinue to generate a large portion of the unusual spring workload for
tree maintenance. In spite of the standard spraying program for dis-
ease and insect control , the anthracnose disease infestation, which
attacked the Ash trees and the Sycamore trees, was unusually virulent
this spring.
-7-
