. , •
PARK DIVISION PONTHLY REPORT
AUGUST 1978
Work has been completed on the 49er Field in preparation for the train-
ing season this fall and winter. The team returned to the facilities on
the 21st of August and it is now receiving regular use. The portable
fencing was put in place and covered with a new plastic-type of tarp
that was purchased for this particular use. Complete remarking of the
field was accomplished by utilizing weed oil which "burns in" the lines
in such a manner that maintenance of the lines is greatly reduced,
Division personnel assisted with the Operalunch Programs which were
co-sponsored by the Civic Cultural Commission and the Downtown Merchants
Association. This work consists of providing the platform and chairs and
electrical connections for the concert.
With the completion of the softball season, work is underway to prepare
the City fields for the coming soccer season.
During the time between the end of the softball season and the beginning
of the soccer and flag football season, some turf renovation will take
place. The areas will be fertilized at reduced rates, due to reduced
budgets; however, this combined with aerifi.cation will stimulate a stronger
and healthier turf for the excessive wear received by soccer and football
use.
Tree Trimmer Sam Noonan won the Al1-Around Championship Title at the
International Tree Trimmers' Jamboree held in Toronto, Canada, August
12-13. The competition tested speed, accuracy, safety, and efficiency
in various events relating to professional skills. This accomplishment
brought very favorable publicity to Redwood City and the City Council at
their meeting of September 11 , will officially recognize the accomplish-
ments of Mr. Noonan through the presentation of a resolution of apprecia-
tion.
The prolific weed growth this season continues to be a time consuming
problem in the unplanted areas and those places left fallow during the
two-year drought. Shrub and flower beds have required an inordinate
effort to reduce the weed growth both by mechanical means and by the
application of chemical herbicides. The maintenance crews are dili-
gently striving to retain an acceptable level of maintenance on their
assigned areas throughout the City as they adjust to reduced manpower
allocations.
-9-
