� � � � PARK DIVISION MONTHLY REPORT NOVEMBER 1978 The restoration of budget funds through the State Rebate Action enabled the Department to rehire two Gardener/Caretakers and one Senior Park Craftworker that were laidoff July lst resultant from Proposition 13. These additional personnel have greatly assisted in restoring some of the park areas which were deferred resultant from Proposition 13. The Senior Park Craftworker has been heavily burdened with trying to catch up on the repair and maintenance of playground apparatus and park fur- niture that had been deferred due to lack of personnel to accomplish the work. The partial restaffing of the crews, particularly at Redwood Shores, has greatly assisted in the restoration of the landscaped areas at Redwood , Shores. Additional burden will be placed upon the Redwood Shores crew upon the City's acceptance of the new park areas recently completed in the area. It will again be necessary to defer some maintenance in the lower priority areas in order to handle this additional work 1oad. A new pressure pump has been installed at the Red Morton Community Park in order to bolster the water pressures necessary for proper operation of the irrigation system. The electrical hookup to this pump will be included in the re-lighting contract which will soon be underway. This will allow the system to be energized by early spring in preparation for the coming summer months. Recruitment for additional Tree Trimmers and for the Park Supervisor has now been completed. Current schedules indicate that the last remaining Tree Trimmer vacancy should be filled by the end of December. The exami- nation process has been completed for the Park Supervisor and negotiations are now underway for an appointment to fill this position. Indications are that the position should be filled by the middle of December. These appointments will complete the staffing of the Street Tree Operation which has been suffering from vacant positions for over six months. There has been a complete turn over in the Tree Trimmer classification during the last two months which has resulted in significant amount of training and employee orientation which reduces the section's ability to respond both to standard work requests and emergency situations as needed. It is felt that now with complete staffing, this situation should improve. The Islands & Circles P�aintenance crew continues to provide for some reno- vation work in several of the island areas which were deferred and placed in a lower priority category after personnel reductions took place. Addi- tional efforts will be made in this direction. The Street Tree Section continues to handle the normal work requests as well as completing block pruning assignments on the 1300 block of Con- necticut Avenue, and the 1100 & 1200 blocks of James Avenue.
