i <br /> � <br /> PARK DTVISIUN F10NTHLY REPORT <br /> SEPTEN16ER 1976 <br /> The Park Division personnel, together with their normal day-in, day-out <br /> maintenance, completed a variety of assignments during September, �vhich <br /> � included the renovation of some park furniture and play ap�aratus; instal- <br /> � lation of soccer goal posts in several locations throughout the area in <br /> , <br /> preparation for the fall soccer season; installation of additional fencing <br /> at the 49er Field; the installation of autc�matic sprinkler system at t1assa- <br /> chusetts and Fernside; the installation of headerbc,ards in the lawn areas <br /> to improve appearance and maintenance at the Red t�1ori:on Community Park; <br /> assisted in pro�iding the facilities necessary for the Gem and Plineral <br /> Show at the Red Morton Recreation Center; and decorated the Elks Club for <br /> the Annual Chamber of Commerce 49er Luncheon. <br /> The Grounds Maintenance crews initiated the renovation of the planting <br /> areas at the various locations throughout the City in preparation for the <br /> fall planting of bedding plants. 4lork continued at the various athlet�ic <br /> fields in the parks with respect to field preparation for continuing rec- <br /> reation activities such as co-ed softball leagues and church leagues. The <br /> elementary school facilities were also prepared for the start of the flag <br /> football program as a part of the fall after-school recreation program. <br /> The fall turf renovation program is un�e� ��;ay, which includes the reduction <br /> of the thatch in the turf areas that has built up over several years together <br /> with aerification and fertilization. Some reseeding will be necessary in <br /> weak areas. <br /> Training programs durin� the month of September consisted of a one-day <br /> seminar dealing with the latest and most modern equi�ment for gardening <br /> and turf maintenance which acquainted park maintenance personnel with nev� <br /> types of equipment and new procedures used in maintaining turf and land- <br /> scaped areas. There were six from park maintenance personnel attending <br /> this seminar. Additionally, both Park Foremen attended seminars during <br /> �, this period. Park Foreman Griffiths attended a one-day seminar on Dutch <br /> Elm Disease in California. The Dutch Elm Disease is described as the <br /> most destructive disease of shade trees in the United States. The cause <br /> of the disease is a fungus which invades the water conducting tissues of <br /> the elms and restricts ane;, in a majority of the cases, actually blocks <br /> translocation of water and nutrients through the trees. The principal <br /> carrier of Dutch Elm Disease in California is a european elm bark beetle <br /> and should not be confused with the elm jeaf beetle during preliminary <br /> diagnosis of the affected trees. It was of particular interest at the <br /> seminar that new liquid fungicides injected under pressure at the base of <br /> the affected tree are shor•ring great promise towards the control of the <br /> fungus. <br /> -3- <br />
