PARK DIVISION MONTHLY REPORT
DECEMBER 1976
The Park Division personnel continued with their normal grounds and facility
maintenance activities during the month of December . Additionally , several
special jobs were undertaken and completed . Special assignments included
such items as the removal and storage of the portable fencing from the
49er Field , the re- landscaping of the island on Broadway at Hamilton .
The installation of additional trash containers at Community Park and at
Stulsaft Park , the renovation and installation of the flag pole at Com-
munity Activities Building , construction of new batter box forms for the
Little League and softball seasons and the renovation of some of the plant-
ing beds in landscaped areas .
The Tree Trimming Crews initiated the removal of several of the trees in
the 100-300 block of El Camino at the request of the Traffic Engineer in
preparation for the forthcoming renovation of El Camino throughout the
City . In addition to their routine tree maintenance activities , forestry
crew personnel implemented a city-wide tree planting effort which resulted
in " catching up " both the new tree and replacement tree requests which
had been backlogged for some time .
The vacancy created by the retirement of Mr . William Smith as Park Equip-
ment Mechanic has now been filled . Mr . Kenneth Coleman was appointed to
the position effective December 1 , 1976 . Mr . Coleman has a very diverse
background in grounds and equipment maintenance and was recently employed
by Sunset Magazine in their landscape division .
In the area of training , the Department arranged for a field workshop to
be conducted on the installation and maintenance of moisture sensing
equipment , often known as irrometers . Mr . Ira Denison , with Ewing Irri -
gation Company , provided the instruction . The Department recently installed
moisture sensing equipment with the irrigation installation at Palm Park .
This equipment automatically senses the moisture content of the soil and
controls the irrigation system to be in compliance with the soil needs .
This equipment is also being installed in the new park installations at
Redwood Shores . Proper operation and maintenance of this equipment should
result in a considerable reduction in the use of water for irrigation as
well as greater efficiency of the irrigation system . Park personnel
involved in this instruction included the Foreman , Gardeners , Leadman
and Senior Park Craftworkers .
Once the personnel are proficient at utilizing the equipment , it is pro-
posed to add additional moisture sensing devices to existing irrigation
installations as well as any new installation of new park areas . Even-
tually , this should have a significant impact on water usage for park
irrigation purposes .
-8-
