_ �. ,._..�.�._ <br /> 5. SPECIAL ORDER(S) OF THE DAY <br /> A. Mayor's Beautification Awards -Jeffrey Gee, Mayor <br /> Mayor Gee announced that this event represents the 26th Annual Mayor's Beautification <br /> Recognition program and thanked the Pride and Beautification Committee, the City <br /> Manager's staff, volunteers, judges and the participants for their hard work and efforts. <br /> He provided some background information on the process noting that this program <br /> improves community aesthetics, fosters civic pride, beautifies the community and <br /> makes Redwood City an overall more attractive city. Council Member Howard read the <br /> awardees' names and the description of the award and Mayor Gee presented the award <br /> to the recipients (presentation on file). <br /> B. Canada College Update by Lawrence G. Buckley, President <br /> Mr. Buckley, President of Canada College, provided an update on that academic <br /> institution's work to improve traffic safety by people going to and from the College along <br /> Farm Hill Boulevard and 280. He noted that he has been in frequent communication <br /> with Mayor Gee and the Police Chief to address these issues. He added that all new <br /> students are required in their orientation to review driving safety tips and the importance <br /> of maintaining good relations with others. He also said that beginning in January, the <br /> College will provide information, as per the "Campus Safe Act" bill that Governor Brown <br /> recently signed, on date rape, domestic violence and stalking. President Buckley <br /> provided detailed information on the increasing student enrollment, with about 6,700 <br /> students currently, but most are part-time versus district-wide (at the two other colleges) <br /> enrollment is down 1 percent. He also said that the College recently installed a new <br /> solar farm that is due to come online early next year and he believes it will cut their <br /> energy costs by 50 percent. He invited Council to visit the college as his guest. <br /> Council discussion included positive comments on two recent successful events at the <br /> College, the Arts & Olive Festival and the Artistry in Fashion event. One Council <br /> Member inquired about the housing on site. President Buckley stated that it has been <br /> successful it is fully occupied with a waiting list. He added that there have been 24 <br /> faculty and staff who were able to buy homes because they were able to save money <br /> with the subsidized housing. <br /> 6. PUBLIC COMMENT <br /> Ralph Garcia, spoke on behalf of the Golden Gate Chapter of the Falcon Club of <br /> America, about the Falcon Show's meaning and how it will come to Main Street this <br /> Saturday. He noted that the Falcon was the father of the Mustang and that the show is <br /> from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and while it is free, adults voting on the cars are welcome to <br /> make donations. <br /> 7.
