I
recognized this year. On February 6th the Chamber will have its 117th Anniversary and
Awards event. He also announced that on February 27, 2015 , there will be the State of
City Address , with a report from Mayor Gee and Vice Mayor Foust.
Amelia Garibay, spoke in Spanish with an interpreter, about sending a letter to the cities
of Menlo Park and Atherton and the landowner of Le Mar Trailer Park because they are
the ones being affected by the flooding . She noted that they live there because other
places are too expensive; cannot pay high rents, and their pay is low. She said
residents' concerns include being afraid for the children living there, cleaning the creek
and that she asked that something be done to help them .
Mayor Gee noted that City Manager Bell will comment at the end of Public Comment.
Cynthia Woodman , President of a small condo association in Redwood City, said she is
wondering if the City has a Water Plan and she wants to know where the City is on
dealing with the drought issue. She is concerned that their small 9-unit association
currently has one small water meter and that metering all the units would be very costly
versus being able to grandfather in their current system . She has concerns with creating
different meters for each unit.
The City Manager explained that there is a Water Plan online and the Public Works
Director gave her his contact information . Dr. Bell introduced the new Public Works
Director, Ramana Chinnakotla, and expressed his appreciation for his experience and
knowledge. Mayor Gee welcomed the new Public Works Director and the Mayor asked
if Dr. Bell could provide an update to the issue of the Bayfront Canal. Dr. Bell said that
various cities have their run off channeled to that area from Menlo Park, to Atherton to
Redwood City to Woodside. He said that Redwood City has been in communications for
the last two years about the situation and how to develop a plan to redirect the water to
the Ravenswood Pond complex. He said this is a multi-agency issue and he provided a
timeline. He explained that while staff is working with these agencies there will be
challenges with permitting and funding to mitigate the flooding issue in that area .
Dr. Bell said he also wanted to address the issue of the removal of vegetation and he
said that it is a two-year program and the City does inspect the area every year. He said
that when it was inspected last year it was overgrown and the only window to remove the
vegetation is from April to October and staff will be back out there in the spring of this
year to remove vegetation . Dr. Bell also said that there will be a community meeting to
explain the details regarding the efforts related to this issue and how the City is proactive
in seeking a solution . Mayor Gee thanked the various community members who helped
the impacted residents and assisted as the flooding was taking place. He expressed his
gratitude.
7.
