He identified the school properties that have
been sold, those standing vacant and unused, and those partially in use.
Discussion followed regarding whether the Board has specific plans for
the unused sites; that a consultant firm in Southern California is pre-
paring a demographic survey to be used in determining appropriate use
of the District's properties and the results are expected to be avail-
able within a month; that parts of several of the properties are cur-
rently being rented out. It was indicated by the Board that the District
prefers to retain possession of the properties, and among the reasons is
the possibility that in the future the trend in enrollment could reverse.
Hoover School recreation area proposal
Washington School site
Discussion continued regarding the Hoover School and Washington School
properties; the lack of open space in the unincorporated part of East
Redwood City; that the only parks that are relatively close to Washington
School are Palm Park, and Fleishman Park which is expected to be com-
pleted next year. City Manager Fales expressed the belief that the
City and the School District have a great deal of mutual interest in
mug
the parts of the City near Hoover and Washington Schools, and that
places are needed where wholesome activities geared toward youth can be
conducted. He stated that the Police Youth Club is interested in ex- "'d"`
panding its activities in that area, and described some of the activi-
ties in the PYC program such as boxing, karate, soccer and baseball , as
well as a Police cadet program. He commented on the potentially serious
problem of increased gang activity seen in other parts of the State, and
Jnt.Mtg.
11/19/80
