El Camino Real is a wide boulevard <br /> that runs for many miles along the San Francisco peninsula. At the location of the project, El <br /> Camino real is four lanes wide with a center median. El Camino Real has witnessed many <br /> changes over its 250-year history and currently has a fragmented design with a variety of <br /> architectural styles, uses, and heights. <br /> History of EI Camino Real <br /> El Camino Real ("The Royal Road")originally connected the 21 Franciscan missions. After the <br /> missions' decline, El Camino Real was a key road for transposition in California until supplanted <br /> during the 1860s by the railroad. By the 1890s, concern about the loss of El Camino Real's <br /> historic significance prompted efforts to mark the route with iron mission bells. El Camino Real <br /> regained its importance in the early 20th century when it became part of the State highway <br /> 4 <br />
