5. SPECIAL ORDER(S) OF THE DAY - None. <br /> Mayor Gee acknowledged February as Black History month and he saluted and <br /> recognized this important fact recognizing the contributions and legacy of Black History <br /> at a national, federal and local levels. <br /> 6. PUBLIC COMMENT <br /> Nancy Radcliffe and Teresa Garcia announced the new Miss Redwood City / San <br /> Mateo County, Emily McNiel. They showed photos of Miss McNiel alone, with her court, <br /> and with the first runner up, Miss Isabelle Robles (presentation on file). <br /> Roxanna Christy expressed concern about high rents and rent increases saying that <br /> rents have been raised every two months and that a lot of people will become homeless <br /> if they do not receive help. She also expressed concern about low income housing, <br /> such as trailers and boats going away. <br /> A gentleman, who lives in the same complex as Ms. Christy, spoke in Spanish about the <br /> rent increases and Council Member Aguirre translated into English. He said that rents <br /> have been raised twice in the last two months, and he is here to find out how they can <br /> get help and assistance and what steps can be taken. <br /> Dr. Bell asked Mr. Beth, Parks, Recreation and Community Services Director to provide <br /> his business card to the speakers in order to find out how the City can help. Mayor Gee <br /> thanked Council Member Aguirre for her help in doing simultaneous translation, and he <br /> made comments about rent control and how he is aware of some of the increases and <br /> that these owners will be contacted. <br /> 7. CONSENT CALENDAR <br /> M/S Foust/Aguirre to approve the Consent Calendar as presented. Motion carries <br /> unanimously by electronic vote. <br /> Mayor Gee made comments about agenda item 7.1A and how this shows the City <br /> Council and staff focus on Housing and how Redwood City qualifies to apply for such <br /> grant because of its investment on affordable housing, transit and transportation. <br /> Mayor Gee reiterated all the Council actions via the Consent Calendar and he thanked <br /> the Utilities Committee and staff for their work in maintaining and upgrading our <br /> infrastructure as stipulated by agenda item titled Sanitary Sewer Rehabilitation program. <br /> 1.
