9.A. - Page 11
4. DESIGNATION CRITERIA AND REQUIRED DOCUMENTATION
4.A The community has supported(within the last three years) a historic or cultural preservation project
that has promoted and/or is promoting heritage tourism or otherwise fostering economic vitality. The
project must have involved a public-private partnership between government entities and at least one
civic association,non-profit organization, or business enterprise.
The Redwood City Path of History
Redwood City's history has always been a source of great pride for the community, particularly
Downtown where there are many well-preserved examples of historic structures and points of interest.
Now,these historic icons are compiled and honored as the City's Path of History program. Mayor Jeff
Ira presided over a special ceremony dedicating the Path of History self-guided walking tour, historical
information kiosk, and unique commemorative sculpture on October 13, 2010. The program continues
with on-going maintenance and events and guided tours each May during National Historic
Preservation Month.
Wells Fargo played a significant role in funding the development of the Path of History information
kiosk and sculpture. The Mayor's short dedication ceremony featured an appearance by the Wells Fargo
horse-drawn stagecoach, harkening back to Redwood City's rich history of the old west. In addition, the
new historic information kiosk and the commemorative sculpture were unveiled, and the new self-
guided historic walking tour brochure was made available to the public.
Redwood City, its Historic Resources Advisory Committee, and its Planning Commission have been
working for the past several years on the Path of History project. It's a wonderful new Downtown
attraction which will draw people to enjoy and appreciate historic Redwood City. The tour path is also
lined with a variety of shops and restaurants to engage tourists.
This program is an excellent example of a true public-private partnership. Partners include: Wells
Fargo Bank, the Redwood City Civic Cultural Commission, the Peter and Paula Uccelli Foundation,
and the Redwood City Library Archives Committee. Additionally, special thanks go to other
contributors,including A.J. Guaspari,Fable, Inc.,A and F Engineering, Inc.,Branko Kruslin,and staff
of Redwood City's Planning,Housing and Economic Development Department,Public Works Services
Department, and the Police Department.
The Path of History includes 12 historic sites, including
1. California Square: part of the original town site survey of 1854
2. Lathrop-Connor-Mansfield House: built in 1863
3. The San Mateo County Courthouse: built in 1910;on the National Register of Historic Places
4. New Sequoia/Fox Theater:built in 1928; still an entertainment destination and former site of
Redwood City Elementary School
5. Sequoia High School: founded in 1895
6. Embarcadero&Turning Basin Site/Redwood Creek: site of the beginning of Redwood City
with logging operations beginning in 1850
PRESERVE AMERICA COMMUNITIES PROGRAM:2015 COMMUNITY APPLICATION Page 7 of 21
