9.A. - Page 17
Even though the Union Cemetery Association stopped operating in 1918,the cemetery was still used by
local undertakers. During the Depression, many of San Mateo County's poor were placed here. Few
burials occurred between 1940 and 1960. The last was in 1963.
When the Union Cemetery Association became inactive in 1918,no one assumed responsibility for the
cemetery's care.Years of neglect and vandalism took their toll. While there are more than 2,200
documented burials, many graves are unmarked. The Historic Union Cemetery Association is in the
process of restoring this historic treasure, which has been on the National Register of Historic Places
since 1983.
Volunteers from the Historic Union Cemetery Association give annual tours each May as part of
National Historic Preservation Month.
A historic preservation awards or recognition program:
Annual Community Historic Preservation Awards
The annual Mayor's Beautification Recognition Program is coordinated by Redwood City's Pride and
Beautification Committee. Since 1987 these volunteer members from the community, schools,
businesses, and local organizations serve to promote the quality of life in Redwood City by creating,
participating in, and supporting activities and programs that improve the City's physical and aesthetic
environment. The Program is designed to recognize the efforts of residents,non-profit agencies and
businesses to maintain or improve Redwood City's neighborhoods. A panel of all-volunteer judges
screen the entries and the winners are honored at a special reception certificate award presentation
during a Council meeting, broadcast live on cable television and featured on City's website. The
Program involves various categories under the general heading of"Structural Remodel/Design." Every
year, the Redwood City Historic Resources Advisory Committee recommends historic properties whose
rehabilitation/restoration exemplifies work that is compliant with the Secretary of Interior's Standards.
In 2010, for example, five properties took"best of'Historic Preservation/Restoration category awards:
One single-family dwelling, two multi-family residences and two commercial structures.
4.D Images
Submit three to five images that show people using and enjoying your historic cultural and natural
resources(CD with digital images scanned at a resolution of 300 dots per inch(dpi) or greater or 4"x
6"color photographs) and provide caption and credit information for each. Do not superimpose
captions, dates/time stamps, or credits on the images.
Please see CD with images marked Item 4.D.
We have also included photos on the next few pages.
PRESERVE AMERICA COMMUNITIES PROGRAM:2015 COMMUNITY APPLICATION Page 13 of 21
