A village evolved near the port. The land, part of the 69,000 acre Arguello family
rancho used for grazing and providing supplies to missions, was later owned by Simon Mezes, who
subdivided it and called it"Mezesville." It was later called Redwood City, reflecting the lumber
industry.
In 1856 the County of San Mateo was established and Redwood City was selected as the County Seat.
The completion of the railroad in 1863 also led to the growth of Redwood City. In 1868, Redwood City
was the first incorporated city in the county.
In the 1920s the port was moved to its present location closer to the Bay and several important
buildings were constructed such as the Fox Theater and a fire station. Several historic figures visited
Redwood City, including Wyatt Earp and Presidents Hoover and Harrison.
Attempts to rebuild downtown in the 1960s did not materialize and by the 1980s the community began
historic preservation efforts. Today,Downtown is undergoing revitalization while celebrating its
history.
Attachment:Mezesville Map
5.ADDITIONAL SUPPORTING MATERIAL
Written endorsements by preservation organizations, civic organizations, members of Congress, and
other elected officials are encouraged.
