City of Redwood City Redwood Shores Branch Library

subsurface materials are encountered visually or by odor in the borings or CPT, such borings
or the CPT will be immediately terminated until we receive direction from you. Lowney
Associates will notify you as soon as possible of such an occurrence, and we will both
mutually decide whether to continue, modify, or cease the remainder of the drilling program
and whether an environmental assessment should be conducted. All added costs incurred
because of suspected hazardous substances would be charged on a time-and-expense basis
over and above the established fees for the site investigation. We assume that soil cuttings
can be dispersed on site.
Laboratory Testing
We will perform laboratory testing on the sampled soils to evaluate engineering properties.
This testing will include 1) moisture contents and dry densities, 2) a Plasticity Index (PI) test
on a representative surficial soil sample to evaluate plasticity and expansion potential, 3) one
R-value test on existing materials for pavement design, and 4) at least one consolidation test
to evaluate the compressibility of the Bay Mud for detailed settlement analysis, and 5) we
may perform other tests to aid in our analysis of settlement, bearing capacity, liquefaction
potential, and/or other geotechnically related items. To minimize laboratory costs, we will
also use the information collected during our previous subsurface exploration at the site.
Office Studies Avoid coordination delays waiting
We will review the field and laboratory for extra report copies by having a
data and perform engineering analysis to digital (pdf) color, signed, and
stamped copy of the report ready
evaluate building foundations, retaining for distribution.
walls, slabs-on-grade, site earthwork, and
pavements. We will prepare a report that includes the results of our design-level
geotechnical investigation and our conclusions and recommendations for design of the
proposed branch library project. Our report will include a site plan, boring logs, a CPT log,
and laboratory test data in addition to the following information. A final color, signed, and
stamped report copy will be emailed to you in Adobe Acrobat (pdf) format, so that you have
report copies available for distribution at all times.
Site Conditions: We will review and summarize the surface, subsurface, and ground water
conditions and the engineering properties of the soils encountered during the site
investigation.
Geologic Hazards: We will discuss on a reconnaissance level, the potential geologic hazards
at the site, including liquefaction, lateral spreading, differential seismic compaction, fault
rupture, and ground shaking.
LOWNE\~ ASSOC lATE S Page 3
Environmental/Geotechnical/Engineering Services P13333
-
