7.1.L. - Page 3 <br /> miscellaneous retirement employee to take advantage of partially reduced <br /> personnel costs. Upon successful completion of the police academy the <br /> individual's employee classification will change from Police Officer Trainee <br /> to Police Officer. Under this option the City will incur personnel costs, <br /> hiring expenses, tuition and training - related expenses. A projection of <br /> expenses related to this option is summarized as follows: <br /> Personnel Costs: $81,600 <br /> Hiring Expenses: $3,000 (i.e. Background, Medical, etc.) <br /> Tuition & Equipment: $6,700 <br /> Total projection: $91,300 <br /> Option 2: Recruit and pledge to hire a self- sponsored recruit currently enrolled in the <br /> police academy. A contractual agreement would be incorporated into this <br /> option in an effort to entice the recruit through the promise of future <br /> employment and financial support, while simultaneously protecting the <br /> financial interests of the City. The agreement would call for the City to <br /> repay the recruit for academy tuition and equipment - related expenses <br /> upon successful completion of either the police academy or the post - <br /> academy Field Training program. The incentive payment timeline would <br /> be established to suit the specific needs of the involved parties, but could <br /> include a combination of whole or partial payments made during the police <br /> academy, upon successful completion of the academy, at established <br /> milestone intervals during the Field Training program, upon successful <br /> completion of the Field Training program and /or upon completion of the <br /> probationary period. The City would incur hiring, tuition and training - <br /> related expenses under this option. A projection of expenses related to <br /> this option is summarized as follows: <br /> Hiring Expenses: $3,000 (i.e. Background, Medical, etc.) <br /> Tuition & Equipment: $6,700 <br /> Total projection: $9,700 <br /> ALTERNATIVES <br /> This is an informational report only with no action requested from Council at this time. <br /> FISCAL IMPACT <br /> The fiscal impact associated with exercising either option, or a combination of both <br /> options, is difficult to predict due to the unique nature of the entry level officer hiring <br /> process. Based upon current Police Department staffing predictions, staff anticipates <br />
