7.1.A. - Page 1
REPORT
To the Honorable Mayor and City Council
From the City Manager
July 27, 2015
SUBJECT
Agreement for support of the Redwood City Community Schools for fiscal year 2015-
2016
RECOMMENDATION
By motion, approve and authorize the City Manager to execute the agreement between
the City of Redwood City and the Redwood City School District for support of the
Redwood City Community Schools for fiscal year 2015 -2016.
BACKGROUND
The City of Redwood City (City) in partnership with the Redwood City School District
(District) and the County of San Mateo (County) agreed to assist the Redwood City
Community Schools (RWCCS) to sustain the program located at Fair Oaks, Hoover,
Kennedy, Garfield and Taft Schools. Community Schools provide an array of support
services through school -based family resource centers. These services include access
to public benefits, counseling, health services, educational support and community
development activities. The Community Schools were established to actively involve
Redwood City residents, educators and human services providers to help children
become successful learners and community citizens. This program is overseen by the
Redwood City School District and supported by Redwood City 2020. Community
Schools reach students and their families in a way that few programs are able to do
because they are strategically linked to the school communities they serve.
The program serves approximately 4000 students, most who qualify for free or reduced
school lunches, and the majority with English as their second language. Research
shows that Community Schools are successful in helping these students address
barriers to learning and achieve academic success.
ANALYSIS
The funds contributed by the City of Redwood City, County of San Mateo (under
separate agreement with District), and Redwood City School District support the core
operations of the Community Schools with $100,000 from the City, $113,676.00 from
the County, and $195,000 from the District annually.
At this time, staff is requesting that Council approve the agreement for fiscal year 2015-
2016.
