They promised to launch a world premiere reopening <br /> that would be the largest in their company's history. <br /> Charles Skouras was an executive with Fox West Coast Theaters from 1932 until his death in 1954. He and his brother Spyros <br /> turned around fortunes of the ailing chain during the 1930s and by the late 1940s, Charles was one of the highest paid executives <br /> in the country. He embarked upon a post war remodeling and construction campaign to increase attendance and he created an in- <br /> house design team led by designer Carl G. Moeller (1893 - 1975). <br /> The Skouras style interior typically featured "sweeping scrollwork, deep hanging festooned drapes, multi - colored neon lit covers, <br /> generous use of gold leaf and lighting features of brass and aluminum. " See Figuree 12. On the outside, the Skouras style <br /> employed a brightly lit marquees, ticket booths resembling a juke box, large display cases of coming attractions, and concession <br /> stands with etched aluminum panels. See Figures 14 and 15. Preston <br /> Kaufmann says that little is known about Moeller and Kaufmann speculates that he was not a certified architect which allowed Fox <br /> to hire him for lower salary. It is not known if Moeller received training or education in architecture or design.
