'I . I . .
estimate of annual costs without the cap, and the City has stated the maximum would be
$304,000 with the cap.
-
Firefighter Anderson described all the services the Redwood City Fire Department
provides the public from fire and medical services to fire safety education, business
inspections and assisting the elderly.
Firefighter Anderson read into the record a letter from Emily Sung, Safety Manager of
Oracle Corporation, expressing Oracle's eagerness to see a permanent fire facility in
Redwood Shores and urging the Council to approve a temporary station. (Letter on file in
the City Clerk Department.)
MEMO 4/16/96
Firefighter Anderson addressed the issue of a time frame for the permanent station and
expressed concern that unforeseen circumstances would arise, as usual, to delay
construction of the permanent station. This probable delay was the basis of their desire
for a temporary station.
Firefighter Anderson showed overhead slides describing necessary improvements on
site and their costs for a permanent and a temporary station that were contained in the
Letter referenced above under Reports. He described how the site could be used as a
multi-use facility for fire, police, park and recreation and public works. Anderson
described how he reached his figures on the annual cost of a temporary station which is
--- described in the Letter previously cited, and said by necessity some of their cost estimates
were guesses and could not be nailed down until they were actually on site.
Firefighter Anderson said "this has never been about South County until now.....Today
was the first day Thirteen was actually in their new Station on (Laurel Street) between
Holly and San Carlos....That's a pretty easy run from that station right across the
freeway...to Redwood Shores, approximately .6 of a mile." However, Holly Street is
scheduled for closure for grade separation construction necessitating a longer route to
Redwood Shores, and Station 17 on Industrial is scheduled to be demolished and not
replaced on that site. Anderson further described diminished fire response services
available to Redwood Shores and the increased time it will now take to respond.
Anderson said when "the big one" occurs all fire personnel and equipment will be
committed to their own districts. Even if they wanted to go to Redwood Shores they
would be prevented from doing so.
In response to Council questions, Firefighter Anderson more fully described the
Firefighter's estimate for the total cost of a temporary station: $119,000 annual recurring
costs, and $48,209 one time costs equaling $167,209, which includes firefighters labor
costs.
'----' MINUTE BOOK NO. 54
Regular Meeting Minutes Page No. 189
April 15, 1996
Page 7
