Senior Engineer Chang advised that the James Avenue Reconstruction project had already
begun and will include water, sewer, street and sidewalks replacement or repairs at a cost of
$1,465,000 to be completed during 1997.
Vice Mayor Howard asked staff to contact disabled residents in the area to get input from
them on how best to meet their needs during this reconstruction.
MEMO 6/24/96
Mayor Hartnett asked staff to inform the residents that when they do not see any activity for
awhile it doesn't mean the project is over, it is just shifting into another phase.
MEMO 6/24/96
Councilman Leipzig said James Avenue was a main entry to Redwood City, and in response
to Councilman Leipzig's questions, Engineer Chang said the City is discussing
undergrounding utilities with PG&E.
Director Nelson discussed the Redwood Shores Community Center. The schematic is
complete and the cost will be about $700,000 with an opening date of January 1998.
Parks, Recreation and Community Services Director Griffiths described some of the
difficulties with the concurrent review by the State Architect's office. Director Griffiths said it
is anticipated that the school will open in September, 1997 and the Community Center in
February or March, 1998. In answer to Council questions, Director Griffiths said the child care
responsibilities have now been switched to the Community Center and the program will be
enlarged from 30 to 60 children. He added that some of the landscaping will be completed by
September, 1997, but the later construction of the Community Center will necessitate roads and
other areas left open for construction equipment, etc.
Senior Engineer Chang described the Hopkins Avenue Water Main Upgrade at $750,000. He
described the priority list which uses the maintenance record, age of equipment, fire protection
requirements and improving the overall water system.
Director Nelson described the Sequoia Station Pedestrian Railroad Crossing project which will
compliment the entry feature program. She added that the Joint Powers Board will also
complete a platform project which will complement the City's pedestrian crossing. Director
Nelson said the City is hoping the JPB will fund the crossing.
In response to Councilwoman's La Berge's questions, Director Nelson said staff would bring
designs for Council input and approval in late fall. Director Nelson advised she would bring
the timetable back to Council.
MEMO 6/24/96
------------------------------------_____---mm_---------------------______m--_m--------------------------------------------------------
SPECIAL COUNCIL BUDGET STUDY SESSION JUNE 22,1996
MINUTES PAGE 10
MINUTE BOOK NO. 54
Page No. 315
