parking lot. She stated it will be a bookend to the Jefferson project, across from the new City Hall and next to the Library and the budget reflects the flexibility needed for this project. Mayor Hartnett requested that these plans come back to the Council for design approval. He said the Council needed to consider whether all of this site should be used as a parking lot. Also, the current building has been mentioned as a temporary site for the school district. Councilman Claire said originally the site was to provide additional parking for the Library and the Council should remember that original intent. MEMO 6/24/96 Councilman Leipzig said he was pleased that the City and County were jointly repairing Canyon Road. In response to Councilman Ruskin's questions, Director Nelson said it would be appropriate for the FY 1997/98 C.I.P. Illuminated Street Name Signs Project to be referred to the Council Streets Committee. MEMO 6/24/96 In response to Councilman Leipzig's questions, Director Nelson said about $450,550 was put aside every year for sidewalk programs, and explained that the program was scaled back in FY 1996/97 to meet Council's direction to complete the Broadway Sidewalks project. The program will resume in 1997/98. Vice Mayor Howard asked staff to communicate to property owners who are expecting the City to repair their sidewalks according to an established schedule about this deferment. Councilman Claire reminded everyone that in other cities sidewalk repair is at the expense of the homeowner; but in Redwood City there is a program available whereby the City will share costs with the property owner to fix the sidewalk in a more timely fashion.
