C. Ginny Doley, 755 Portwalk Place, Redwood City, asked to speak on Item 8A, the
W estport Appeal. ~-
In response to Council questions on procedure, City Attorney Schricker advised that
although the public hearing on Westport was closed, individuals had a right to speak on
any item on the agenda. However, since Mrs. Doley's remarks would not be made during
the public hearing, they would not be part of the official public record and need not
necessarily be considered by the Council in its deliberations regarding the appeal. It is the
public hearing upon which the Council must base its decision.
Ginny Doley told Council that approval of the Westport project would create too much
additional traffic and air pollution which would endanger her health. Mrs. Doley said
traffic was at a critical point now, and described how she had to take smaller roads to get
out of Redwood Shores due to congestion on Marine Parkway. Mrs. Doley said the idling
traffic causes excess exhaust fumes and has a negative effect on the environment. Mrs.
Doley asked the Council to vote no on this project. Mrs. Doley submitted a letter from her
neighbor, Karen Ullah, 753 Portwalk Place, also in opposition to the Westport project.
D. Robert Garber, 101 Acacia Lane, Redwood City, described the 75% increase in sewer
charges over the last 5 years and advised that people on fixed incomes which increase by
an inflation factor, cannot afford 75% increase in sewer bills.
City Manager Everett advised that staff would contact Mr. Garber and take a look at the
bill and review the situation with him.
MEMO 1/31/95
E. In response to Mrs. Doley's comments regarding Council experiences with traffic at
commute time in Redwood Shores, Council Members stated they had been caught in rush
hour traffic and clearly understood the traffic problems that exist; and advised that those
problems would be addressed.
City Manager Everett reminded everyone that the developer did have the legal right at
the present time to build a development of 1,250,000 square feet and the Council could not
do anything about it. It is important for people to remember that fact, because the project
now proposed is in fact a better project and a smaller project.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
2.
