would prohibit shoppers from leaving their cars at Sequoia Station and walking to the
downtown shops.
Nick Watry, 1015 Lake View, Redwood City, member of the Planning Commission,
spoke in favor of the entry feature program, described its unanimous approval by the
Planning Commission, and described the civic pride that would emanate from these
beautifully designed and community approved improvements. Mr. Watry advised that
although the Council removed the proposed kiosks from the original entry feature plans,
he and other designers in the City have made a commitment to raise funds to pay for a
kiosk at Middlefield and Veterans. Mr. Watry added that Mr. Raiser of the Main!
Middlefield Housing Development has also committed to joining the effort to raise money
for another kiosk at the corner of Main/Middlefield.
Geri Mayers, 2303 Broadway, Redwood City, spoke in favor of the Hamilton Street
Improvement Project and described the trees slated for removal as dangerous and messy,
and it was time to remedy the mistake of planting them in the first place, and move
forward.
Joe Steinfeld, 850 Main Street, Redwood City, spoke in opposition to the subject project;
advised that the public was never given a chance to discuss if the improvements should be
made, only what kind of improvements should be built; stated that Sequoia Station has
been a poor neighbor and not supportive of the downtown area; advised that the state did
not support the program and the City would not receive the grant it applied for; and asked
the Council to delay a decision until other alternatives could be explored.
Mark Fletcher, 36 Benato, Redwood City, President of Forests Forever, asked the
Council to have the trees trimmed rather than having them removed.
John Asmus, 51 Woodhill, Redwood City, long time Redwood City Planning
Commissioner now retired, stated that he originally was skeptical about the improvements,
but looked carefully at the plans and their thoughtful development and now supported the
project. Mr. Asmus suggested that the Council approve the plan and go forward with it
now.
Sandra Farley, 1301 Himmel Avenue, member of the Redwood City Kiwanis Club and
Assistant Manager of the Farmers Market, spoke in favor of the improvements and
described how the Market would benefit from them by providing greater visibility and
access.
Norman Shapiro, 345 Middle Road, Belmont, Manager of the Farmers Market, stated he
was authorized by the Downtown Redwood City Kiwanis Club to express strong support
for the staff, Planning Commission, and the professional staff, and the proposed
improvements. In answer to Council questions Mr. Shapiro stated he saw no problems
that would arise from the proposed plan, he had been in on the plan from the beginning,
MINUTE BOOK NO. 53 Regular Meeting Minutes
Page No. 096 March 13, 1995
Page 5
