5. BOARDS, COMMISSION AND COMMITTEE REPORTS
A. Report from the Council Public Safety Committee regarding current talks with the
Menlo Park Fire Protection District; (705)
REPORT: Memorandum from Mayor Hartnett to Councilwoman Buchan, Chair of
the Public Safety Committee, November 17, 1995;
Memorandum from Firefighter Adrian Anderson to Councilwoman Buchan;
Mayor Hartnett called on Pete Hughes, who had submitted a speaker's card.
Pete Hughes, 18 Admiralty Court, Redwood City, asked Council to commit to a schedule
for a Fire Station in the Redwood Shores neighborhood.
Councilwoman Buchan, Chairwoman of the Council Public Safety Committee, described
the discussions and goals of consolidation talks - increased service levels, employee
participation and cost savings. Councilwoman Buchan provided an update on the
meetings held.
Mayor Hartnett described the results of the Joint Study and the determination that
although it was technically feasible, a full consolidation was not practical. Mayor Hartnett
described the alternatives under discussion including possible contractual agreements
involving MPFD serving Redwood City Engine 11 area, and the Redwood City Truck
Company serving MPFD. The net effect would be that each jurisdiction would have the
same service level but a crew would be available to support other stations. The Council's
goal is to provide a fire station for the Redwood Shores neighborhood.
Mayor Hartnett described the proposal submitted by Redwood City Firefighters signed
by Adrian Anderson, President of No. 2400, IAFF, stating it was a significant proposal
that would result in a station in the Redwood Shores neighborhood and bears close
scrutiny by the Public Safety Committee. Mayor Hartnett advised that the Committee
would review all the plans to see if the cost data supported the proposals. He thanked the
firefighters for their participation and entrepreneurial spirit, and advised that the
Committee would make a recommendation to the full Council as soon as all the
information had been gathered and analyzed.
Councilman Claire asked the Public Safety Committee to look at the Dumbarton spur and
the plans for the Ampex property when determining service levels needed in those areas.
Councilwoman Buchan thanked Mayor Hartnett, former Councilman Sanfilipo and the
Redwood City firefighters for working so hard to provide the best fire service possible to
the people of Redwood City.
MEMO 11/28/95
.--
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
MINUTE BOOK NO. 53 Regular Meeting Minutes
Page No. 446 November 27, 1995
Page 6
