- and Councilman Sanfilipo had done nothing wrong as to matters under investigation; and
could not fathom why Councilwoman Steinfeld wanted a public hearing to be exonerated
agaIn.
Mayor Buchan called on those who wished to speak to this issue.
Pete Hughes, 18 Admiralty Court, Redwood City, longtime resident and Council attendee,
stated he had never heard such a tirade, and asked the Council to dispose of this issue and
quit wasting his and other citizens' time. Mr. Hughes asked the Council to stop Joe
Steinfeld from disrupting Council time by requiring him to submit his comments in writing.
John Lee, who operates a business in Redwood City, stated the issues had been aired but
would never be resolved. Mr. Lee stated he did not like the tactics used by some people,
but it was time to move on.
MIS: LA BERGE/GASPARINI TO ACCEPT AND APPROVE THE REPORT OF THE
PERSONNEL SUBCOMMITTEE
CARRIED BY THE FOLLOWING ROLL CALL VOTE:
A YES: COUNCIL MEMBERS CLAIRE, GASPARINI, GREENALCH, LA
BERGE,
SANFILIPO AND MA YOR BUCHAN
NOES: COUNCIL WOMAN STEINFELD
MINUTE ORDER NO. 94-078
Mayor Buchan declared a recess at 9:20 P.M.
Meeting reconvened at 9:28 p.m.
Vice Mayor Claire stated that although he believed a grand jury was the place for
investigations his colleagues charged the Subcommittee with this investigation. Vice
Mayor Claire presented information and conclusions contained in the second Report. Vice
Mayor Claire advised that Councilman Sanfilipo abided by the instructions of the
Subcommittee last October in a memo to all Council Members to make no further public
comments or written expressions regarding the substance of the investigation, but
Councilwoman Steinfeld did not. Vice Mayor Claire advised that this request was to
protect both parties. He added that he resented allegations that the Subcommittee would
ever do anything unethical. Vice Mayor Claire added that it was the conclusion of the
Subcommittee that Councilwoman Steinfeld tried to discredit the process and members of
the Subcommittee, tried to prevent the testimony of a subpoenaed witness, and through her
actions delayed the work and conclusion of the investigative process as well as forced the
subcommittee to hire outside counsel due to her attacks on City Attorney Schricker. There
were an equal number of letters from Councilwoman Steinfeld's husband that had to be
investigated as well.
Regular Meeting Minutes MINUTE BOOK NO. 52
March 21, 1994 Page No. 179
Page 8
- - ,"-.-.. -- _'0'0'.._'_.'.."""
