Don Davis, Park and Recreation Commissioner, advised that his presentation was not about
art in City buildings, but a fund raising program for the new Red Morton Center.
Commissioner Davis described the focus of the program that will involve the community in
providing extras for the new Center: grants from philanthropic organizations and
individuals; donations that would be recognized by naming a room or facility after the
person who donates the funds; selling tiles or bricks; and perhaps in-kind gifts.
Commissioner Davis advised that a professional fund raiser might become part of the
program. Commissioner Davis thanked the Council for all the support in the past and
advised that he will provide more details in the months to come.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
At 11: 13 P.M., MIS: GASP ARINI/SANFILIPO TO EXTEND THE MEETING TO 11: 3 0 P.M.
CARRIED BY UNANIMOUS VOICE VOTE.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
8. STAFF REPORTS
A Discussion and decisions regarding the Human Services Financial Assistance Program, FY
1994-95, continued from Council Study Session of July 7, 1994. (413-03)
Fair Oaks Community Center Coordinator Gonzalez asked the Council Members if
they had any further questions. After a brief discussion Councilman Greenalch advised he
intended to make a series of motions.
MIS: GREENALCH/CLAIRE TO FUND ALL FY 1994/95 REQUESTS AT THE
FY 1993/94 LEVEL
Councilman Greenalch advised that this first motion would restore the recommended
cuts of$12,490 for a total of$158,501; did not include any funding for new organizations;
and did not include the additional amounts of $30,000 for Shelter Network and $5,000 for
La Raza.
Councilwoman La Berge stated that the Council had charged the Housing and Human
Concerns Committee with hearing requests and making the difficult decisions how to
allocate the limited funds and make recommendations to the Council, and this motion
would disregard all the Committee's hard work.
In response to Council questions, HHCC Chairperson Diane Howard acknowledged that
the HHCC was advised by staff what amount of money was available to distribute, and
that the recommendations were considered guidelines for the Council. Chairperson
Howard asked Council to approve at least one new unduplicated service organization, and
advised that the HHCC was planning to review all organizations to see where there were
overlaps and duplicated services, not only to help the HHCC but the interested
organizations as well.
Iteration of Motion:
MINUTE BOOK NO.52 Regular Meeting Minutes
July 11, 1994
Page No. 316 Page 11
