Councilwoman Steinfeld expressed her concerns that the agreement did not require
seismic and Americans with Disabilities Act retrofitting costs, and advised that she had
talked to the architect and had been assured that the ADA and seismic retrofitting
would be generally costed out under Federal guidelines.
Councilman Sanfilipo expressed his concerns that no structural information was
required in this agreement and asked what was the purpose of the agreement.
Councilwoman La Berge, candidate for re-election, member of the Fox Theatre
Task Force, advised that the purpose of this agreement was to hire a consultant with
expertise in the restoration of historic buildings to determine what were the physical
assets and liabilities of the Fox Theatre and what were the possible uses of the
building. After the data is received, the community will be asked to determine to what
extent the City should be involved in the Theatre's use and/or cost of refurbishing.
In answer to Councilman Sanfilipo's questions, Councilman Greenalch explained
that the agreement was written specifically to keep the City and the Redevelopment
Agency out of the process; and agreed, that the report should be submitted to the
Council rather than the Task Force.
MEMO 8/20/94
Councilmembers reiterated their desire to have an intern do part of the research.
MEMO 8/20/94
Assistant to the City Manager Centeno advised that the purpose of the agreement
was to produce a conceptual report that will look at the Fox Theatre and how it could
be used, on a work shop basis -- it would be a vision of the possibilities of the building.
In response to Council questions, Assistant to the City Manager Centeno advised
that the original $300,000 set aside in the Budget for the Fox Theatre had been
"unallocated," and if the Council wished to allocate funds for work on the Fox Theatre,
it would have to develop a new proposal.
Councilman Greenalch asked that it be clearly spelled out in the agreement to include
ADA and seismic retrofitting, and if an engineer was needed to get that data, then
engineering services should be included in the $15,000.
Mayor Buchan advised that the Council had previously asked to see a Capital
Improvement Plan from Peninsula Center Stage, and the responsibility for seismic
reports was theirs.
MINUTE BOOK NO. 52
Page No. 371
Regular Meeting Minutes
August 29, 1994
Page 5
-- ,-,----- 0' -""- --- ,- ----'---'------~------
